States with larger marijuana-arrest declines see larger bankruptcy declines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBy reducing households\u2019 exposure to criminal justice costs such as fines and legal fees, [legalization] may ease the acute financial shocks that can tip vulnerable households into insolvency,\u201d the study authors, who are affiliated with Shenzhen University in China, wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The average reduction in arrests post-legalization stands at 87 percent \u201cwithout affecting broader crime rates,\u201d the study points out. Bolstering the study\u2019s key finding, data showed that states where there were larger reductions in cannabis arrests were associated with \u201clarger declines in personal bankruptcy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, we find that economically stronger states experience more pronounced reductions in bankruptcy following legalization,\u201d the study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1544612326009463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cUsing state-year panel data from 2001 to 2024, this paper presents evidence that recreational marijuana legalization is associated with a reduction in the personal bankruptcy rate in the United States. This result is stable across a battery of robustness checks.
