Drakken Glass,\u00a0a self-taught artist based in Las Vegas,\u00a0represents\u00a0that legacy by pushing the limits of what glass can be.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raymond\u00a0says his love of glass\u00a0began in childhood\u00a0when he collected marbles and Venetian glass beads and turned them into jewelry. By 2007, his curiosity turned into dedication. Over time, this connection\u00a0elevated\u00a0glass from a simple tool\u00a0to\u00a0collectable art. Techniques evolved,\u00a0designs grew more intricate, and ownership became a form of cultural participation.\u00a0Now, though,\u00a0Raymond\u00a0says the market is filled with cheap, mass-produced imports, often undercutting\u00a0independent artists.\u00a0For those artists, the challenge goes beyond competition. The cost of materials, fuel and equipment continue to climb, while buyers expect to pay less thanks to a market flooded with cheap imports. Glassblowing itself\u00a0remains\u00a0unforgiving. Pieces might crack from uneven heat, break while cooling or fail at any step of production. \u201cEverything is extremely specialized and expensive,\u201d he\u00a0says. \u201cAnd there are just so many failure points.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike digital\u00a0mediums,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0no way to undo mistakes. \u201cAs an artist, we can\u2019t just push the back button,\u201d he says. \u201cIf we mess up, it could be the loss of the entire piece.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

This balance between risk and reward is\u00a0precisely\u00a0what defines the craft and gives\u00a0it\u00a0value.\u00a0Nowhere is that more\u00a0evident\u00a0than in\u00a0Drakken\u00a0Glass\u2019 dragon mask, a wearable glass sculpture inspired by the Aztec feathered serpent and other mythologies. The mask went viral, amassing\u00a0more than\u00a070 million views online. Made with layers of glass and gold, it needs careful heat control and timing at every stage. It takes weeks to build and\u00a0evinces\u00a0years of skill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Creating glass at this level is physically demanding.\u00a0\u201cThere\u2019s a tremendous amount of heat,\u201d\u00a0Raymond\u00a0explains. \u201cYou have to have a high pain tolerance.\u201d\u00a0Glass must be shaped at temperatures\u00a0above\u00a01,000 degrees, which means artists must constantly manage heat distribution.\u00a0One mistake can ruin the whole piece.\u00a0<\/p>\n
