Katrina Jackson-Andrews (D) in a 54-44 vote on Tuesday after it previously passed the Senate by a margin of 33-2 last month. It now heads to the desk of Gov. Jeff Landry (R).<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposal, hospitals would have to create written guidelines allowing covered patients to consume medical cannabis on-site in forms other than smoking or vaping.<\/p>\n<p>Under an amendment adopted by a Senate committee last month, emergency or outpatient departments would be exempted from the policy. The revised legislation also clarifies that patients and primary caregivers are responsible for acquiring and administering medical marijuana, which must be \u201cstored securely at all times in a locked container provided by the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Health care professionals and staff would be prohibited from \u201cadministering, storing, retrieving, or assisting the patient with the medical marijuana,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.la.gov\/legis\/BillInfo.aspx?s=26rs&amp;b=SB270&amp;sbi=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">text<\/a> says.<\/p>\n<p>The amendment, which the sponsor worked on with help from the Louisiana Hospital Association, also allows hospitals to opt out of the policy if federal officials take action against any healthcare facility in the state over medical cannabis use, rather than only allowing those that were specifically targeted to stop complying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis bill was brought at the request of constituents who believe that therapeutic medical marijuana, which is already legal in this state, should be offered in hospitals when patients are terminally ill or otherwise in need the comfort of this medicine,\u201d Jackson-Andrews told the Senate Health and Welfare Committee when the panel took up the legislation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014<br \/>\nMarijuana Moment is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracking hundreds of cannabis, psychedelics and drug policy bills<\/a> in state legislatures and Congress this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patreon supporters<\/a> pledging at least $25\/month get access to our interactive maps, charts and hearing calendar so they don\u2019t miss any developments.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9128 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/MM_Bill_Tracker_V5_blank-26.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Learn more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana bill tracker<\/a> and become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporter on Patreon<\/a> to get access.<br \/>\n\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\">\n<p>Meanwhile in Louisiana, another piece of drug policy legislation that has traction this session would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/louisiana-house-passes-bill-to-create-psychedelic-therapy-pilot-program-funded-by-opioid-settlement-dollars\/\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">create a psychedelic-assisted therapy pilot program, using opioid settlement dollars<\/a> to fund clinical trials aimed at developing alternative treatments such as psilocybin, and ibogaine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Separately, a lawmaker recently filed a proposal that would create a new state task force to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/louisiana-government-task-force-would-study-marijuana-legalization-under-lawmakers-new-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cstudy and develop findings and recommendations regarding the potential legalization of recreational marijuana.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the same time, however, advocates are alarmed that lawmakers sent the governor legislation that threatens to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/louisiana-bill-to-jail-people-for-smoking-marijuana-near-college-campuses-passes-heading-to-governors-desk\/\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">send people to jail for up to one year if they smoke marijuana<\/a>\u00a0within 2,000 feet of a school property\u2014including a college campus.<\/p>\n<p>Another Louisiana legislator, meanwhile, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/louisiana-lawmaker-files-bill-to-create-three-year-marijuana-legalization-pilot-program\/\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">introduced a bill to create an adult-use marijuana legalization pilot program<\/a>\u00a0in the state to determine whether the reform should eventually be expanded and permanently codified.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Candace Newell (D)\u2014who has long championed legislation to end cannabis criminalization and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/louisiana-lawmaker-proposes-marijuana-legalization-pilot-program-as-revenue-source-for-the-state\/\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">filed a similar legal marijuana pilot program measure last session<\/a>\u2014is sponsoring what\u2019s titled the \u201cAdult-Use Cannabis Pilot Program Regulation and Enforcement Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting the bill across the finish line could prove complicated in the conservative legislature, however.
