An agriculture-focused conservative nonprofit connected to a PAC linked to President Donald Trump is applauding his recent marijuana rescheduling order, arguing that it will \u201cdestroy\u201d the illicit market and support seniors and military veterans who could benefit from cannabis.<\/p>\n
America First Agriculture Inc.\u2014a group affiliated with a PAC of a similar name that previously urged Trump to follow through on a campaign pledge to reschedule marijuana<\/a>\u2014said in a new ad that the president \u201cpromised to put America first, and his word is as good as gold.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTrump delivered a secure border, unleashed American energy and provided the largest tax cut in American history. Now Trump has delivered again by rescheduling cannabis, which was classified as more dangerous than fentanyl,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n \u201cTrump\u2019s action will destroy the cartel\u2019s illicit black market, expand medical research and ensure seniors and veterans safely receive the care they need,\u201d the ad continued. \u201cThank President Trump for delivering on another America First promise.\u201d<\/p>\n When President Trump makes a promise, his word is gold. (@amfirstaginc) December 19, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n The description of the impact of the executive order is somewhat exaggerated, in part because it suggests the rescheduling deal is done. In reality, the order directs the attorney general to expeditiously complete the process of moving marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III<\/a> of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).<\/p>\n The Justice Department has not given a timeline for when that might happen, and congressional researchers recently pointed out that it\u2019s possible the agency could start the process over again, or decline to move forward all together<\/a>.<\/p>\n But even if and when the process is finalized, it\u2019s unclear how that would \u201cdestroy\u201d the illicit market. Rescheduling cannabis wouldn\u2019t federally legalize it, which advocates have argued would be necessary in order to meaningfully disrupt illegal sales.<\/p>\n The tax parity impact of moving marijuana to Schedule III is one of the more significant reasons industry stakeholders have been pushing for the incremental reform, even if it doesn\u2019t immediately legalize cannabis. Beyond that, a Schedule III designation would symbolically recognize the plant\u2019s medical value and loosen certain research restrictions tied to Schedule I drugs.<\/p>\n Notably, the organization behind the new ad is associated with the similarly named America First Agriculture Action Inc., a PAC that lists Charles Gantt as its treasurer. Gantt is also the treasurer of Trump\u2019s own political committee, MAGA Inc., which reported receiving $1 million from a marijuana industry PAC<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s supported by multiple major cannabis companies.<\/p>\n That committee, the American Rights and Reform PAC, separately released ads in May that\u00a0attacked former President Joe Biden\u2019s marijuana policy record<\/a>\u00a0in an apparent attempt to push Trump to go further on the issue.<\/p>\n \u2014 Meanwhile, a coalition of Republican state attorneys general are criticizing\u00a0Trump\u2019s decision to federally reschedule marijuana<\/a>, saying cannabis is \u201cproperly\u201d classified as a Schedule I drug with no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.<\/p>\n Earlier this month, groups of\u00a0House and Senate Republican lawmakers also sent letters urging Trump not to reschedule cannabis<\/a>.
