The head of the major gardening supply company Scotts Miracle-Gro says President Donald Trump called a proposal to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule II\u2014rather than Schedule III, as he ultimately directed last week\u2014a \u201chalf-assed\u201d move amid \u201chardcore arguing\u201d in discussions about the reform.<\/p>\n
Scotts Miracle-Gro CEO Jim Hagedorn\u2014whose Hawthorne Gardening Company unit provides supplies for cannabis growers\u2014told NewsNation that a two hour and 15 minute meeting in the Oval Office about rescheduling this month was \u201cinsane,\u201d with heated debate over the policy change \u201cled by the president.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI could see that the president was sympathetic, but I could also see there was tension in the air. He led the meeting,\u201d he said. \u201cThe president rightfully said, \u2018We\u2019re not doing [Schedule II]\u2014II is a half-assed version of III. We\u2019re doing III or we do nothing.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Hagedorn\u2014who said back in August that Trump had told him directly \u201cmultiple times\u201d that he intended to see through the marijuana rescheduling process<\/a>\u2014took some credit for the president\u2019s decision to sign an executive order directing the attorney general to complete the marijuana rescheduling process.<\/p>\n He said<\/a> that, \u201cif it hadn\u2019t been our willingness to stand behind it and see it through,\u201d the Hawthorne Gardening Company would have \u201cgone out of business.\u201d He added that multiple cannabis companies have gone under as the reform sat in flux.<\/p>\n\n The CEO was among many stakeholders to weigh in on the president\u2019s order on rescheduling<\/a>, which would not federally legalize marijuana but would send a symbolic message while loosening certain research restrictions and allow cannabis businesses to take federal tax deductions under an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) code known as 280E.<\/p>\n \u201cWith 39 states already legalizing cannabis in some form, rescheduling to a lower level drug on the federal level has been long overdue,\u201d he said. \u201cPresident Trump deserves credit and praise for taking this bold action, as it reflects the will of the people and sets the stage for much-needed research into the medical use of cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n Scotts Miracle-Gro, meanwhile, has also lobbied at the federal level on cannabis issues<\/a> such as marijuana industry banking access.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s decision to advance rescheduling came at the behest of other cannabis and cannabis-adjacent entrepreneurs as well, including the CEO of the multi-marijuana business Trulieve.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a GOP senator suggested last week that that Trump lied when he said during the signing ceremony for a marijuana rescheduling executive order<\/a> that he hadn\u2019t received any calls in opposition to the reform.<\/p>\n During last week\u2019s event, Trump noted strong public support for marijuana reform and said numerous people called him to voice support for cannabis rescheduling.<\/p>\n Photo courtesy of Mike Latimer.<\/em><\/p>\n The post Trump Rejected \u2018Half-Assed\u2019 Plan To Move Marijuana To Schedule II During \u2018Insane\u2019 Oval Office Meeting, ScottsMiracle-Grow CEO Says<\/a> appeared first on Marijuana Moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n
