Cory Booker (D-NJ) says that while federally legalizing marijuana represents \u201cjustice,\u201d he\u2019s willing to \u201caccept any progress\u201d on cannabis as President Donald Trump weighs a rescheduling proposal. And the senator said, contrary to the partisan \u201ctribalism\u201d that\u2019s endemic in the country, Americans of all political background generally agree that the issue is an \u201carea where we have a common purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At an event in Washington, D.C. that was hosted by IgniteIt on Monday, Booker spoke broadly about the future of cannabis policy, touching on the pending rescheduling issue, full legalization and the bipartisan politics of marijuana reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice is descheduling. We all know that,\u201d Booker said, referring to the idea of removing cannabis completely from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), which would federally legalize it. \u201cThat\u2019s what the right thing to do is: to deschedule. But I will accept any progress over no progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That line might raise some eyebrows among the senator\u2019s critics in the cannabis space who have strongly protested Booker\u2019s prior stance that he was unwilling to support bipartisan marijuana banking legislation without first seeing to it that communities most impacted under prohibition are no longer subject to criminalization and receive restorative justice.<\/p>\n<p>Booker has long championed comprehensive marijuana reform in Congress, however, and he said part of what informs his position is the fact that cannabis is currently a Schedule I drug under the CSA alongside substances such as heroin, which \u201cdefies all science and reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo have it Schedule I\u2014have it the same schedule as these much more severe substances that we all know the consequences can be for our communities\u2014is absurd,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoryBooker?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@CoryBooker<\/a> just delivered one of the most direct messages of the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice is descheduling. We all know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that treating cannabis the same as far more severe substances \u201cdefies all science and reality\u201d and called Schedule I status \u201cabsurd.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5tMLs1RBiH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/5tMLs1RBiH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 IgniteIt Cannabis (formerly Benzinga Cannabis) (@BzCannabis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BzCannabis\/status\/1990535771535913294?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">November 17, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/><\/div>\n<p>The senator also reflected on his 2020 Democratic presidential campaign, where at one point he was on the debate stage with former President Joe Biden and told him that whoever created his marijuana policy platform \u201cmust have been high\u201d because of its incrementalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody in the auditorium laughed,\u201d Booker said, as IgniteIt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.igniteit.com\/news\/2025-11-17\/senator-cory-booker-addressed-a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>. \u201cMy mom didn\u2019t. She\u2019s like, \u2018Do not accuse the vice president of the United States of being high.\u2019 My mom was not pleased.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been consistently fighting this battle for a long time,\u201d the senator said. \u201cI don\u2019t care, Republican or Democrat\u2014by the way, I think most of the problems in this country, the lie that we tell is that they are left or right. No, they are not. We agree on so much more than we disagree with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe savagery of our tribalism, unfortunately, I think it is a delusion that undermines the truth,\u201d the senator said. \u201cThe truth is that we are a nation that has common pain, but our politics don\u2019t serve us to come together around a common purpose. This is an area where we have a common purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To that point, marijuana reform has enjoyed sizable bipartisan support from the American public. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/majority-of-americans-still-back-marijuana-legalization-despite-big-drop-in-republican-support-under-trump-gallup-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Republican support has seen a notable drop-off since last year<\/a>, according to a recent Gallup poll.
