U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy told Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) that he\u2019s \u201caware\u201d of the state\u2019s launch of legal psilocybin services and is committed to continuing to be \u201coutspoken in favor of advancing psychedelic therapies\u201d at the federal level, according to a staffer in the governor\u2019s office.<\/p>\n
During a psychedelics listening session involving multiple state agencies<\/a> on Wednesday, Ean Seeb, who serves as Polis\u2019s special advisor on cannabis and natural medicine, also said that officials are having international conversations about the possibility of expanding Colorado\u2019s program to add regulated access to ibogaine.<\/p>\n Seeb said the governor and staff have \u201chad meetings with federal agencies and will continue to do so\u201d around psychedelics policy.<\/p>\n \u201cInteractions thus far have actually been really positive and helpful,\u201d he said. \u201cSecretary Kennedy told the governor recently that he\u2019s aware of our program, and he\u2019ll remain outspoken in favor of advancing psychedelic therapies.\u201d<\/p>\n Kennedy separately said in June that his agency is \u201cabsolutely committed\u201d to expanding research on the benefits of psychedelic therapy<\/a> and is aiming to provide legal access to such substances for military veterans \u201cwithin 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Doug Collins has also spoken about an \u201ceye-opening\u201d talk with he had Kennedy about the therapeutic potential of psychedelic medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, given that Colorado is still in the early phases of rolling out its voter-approved psychedelics law and has limited historical experience with certain plant-based medicine such as ibogaine, the Polis staffer also noted that state officials have worked to learn directly from the other countries that have a richer history with the psychedelic, such as Gabon.<\/p>\n \u201cWe wish to be respectful\u2014to work towards a common understanding regarding sourcing and education,\u201d Seeb said, adding that Colorado is \u201cpoised to have the largest data set in the history of the world for regulated use.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s no small feat in a time of challenging budgets. We\u2019re thankful to the General Assembly for passing a bill\u2026that will permit us to collect this information and not just on the adverse related events, but also potential benefits that are associated with the use of psilocybin and psilocin\u2014and just those two for now, with more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n The Polis official also express gratitude to philanthropists \u201cwho recognize the value of this work and are poised to provide the resources needed to ensure this happens.\u201d Those first dollars are expected to be received \u201cvery, very soon\u201d to enable the Department of Public Health to undertake the data collection effort<\/p>\n \u201cFrankly, there\u2019s a lot more work to do. We want to get as much done in this administration as we possibly can,\u201d Seeb said.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll just add that Colorado is and will remain at the forefront of both research and policy for natural medicine,\u201d he said. \u201cWe continue working to ensure Colorado is best positioned to take advantage of all the healing properties and uses of psychedelics and natural medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAs colleagues and partners around the state tirelessly work to ensure every Colorado and can get the care that they need to be healthy and thrive, we continue to remain excited about the possibilities and the potential around the use of psychedelics, particularly when it comes to mental health and addiction. The governor is proud of the work Colorado has done to continue investing in our mental health and behavior behavioral health systems to help get people the care that they need and deserve. At the same time, we\u2019re taking the opportunity to explore the potential healing in this space that psychedelics can provide in our regulatory program.\u201d<\/p>\n In addition to implementing a regulatory model for psychedelics<\/a>, Polis also facilitated a historic pardon in June for people with convictions over psilocybin-related activity<\/a> that\u2019s now legal.<\/p>\n Seeb said that \u201cif you think that you might have a qualifying conviction, we encourage you to apply if you are not included on the list\u201d maintained on a state website.<\/p>\n \u201cPossession of controlled substances and a conviction doesn\u2019t necessarily show that it\u2019s psilocybin or psilocin, so sometimes we have to dig into those individual level records. And any information that you have can really assist us as we determine who\u2019s eligible,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we do encourage you to apply if you are qualified.\u201d<\/p>\n The listening session<\/a> came about two months after the\u00a0first psilocybin sessions took place in state-licensed \u201chealing centers\u201d<\/a>\u00a0under Colorado\u2019s\u00a0voter-approved psychedelics legalization law<\/a>.<\/p>\n In May, Polis touted the fact that\u00a0Colorado\u2019s legal psychedelics program is \u201cfully launched\u201d<\/a>\u00a0now that regulators have issued licenses for each part of the psilocybin supply chain.<\/p>\n The governor\u2019s psilocybin clemency move, meanwhile, came several years after Polis issued mass pardons<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0people with prior marijuana convictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n Earlier this session, the governor signed into law a bill that would\u00a0allow a form of psilocybin to be prescribed as a medication<\/a>\u00a0if the federal government authorizes its use.<\/p>\n While Colorado already legalized psilocybin and several other psychedelics for adults 21 and older through the voter-approved ballot initiative, the newly enacted reform will make it so drugs containing an isolated crystalized version synthesized from psilocybin can become available under physician prescription.<\/p>\n Separately in Colorado, a bill that would have\u00a0limited THC in marijuana and outlawed a variety of psilocybin products<\/a>\u00a0died following the lead sponsor\u2019s move to withdraw the legislation.<\/p>\n The post RFK Jr. Discussed Plan For \u2018Advancing Psychedelic Therapies\u2019 With Colorado Governor, Staffer Says<\/a> appeared first on Marijuana Moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n
