A leading drug policy reform organization is rallying supporters to send a message to President Donald Trump: Don\u2019t merely reschedule marijuana, as his administration is considering, but fully legalize it instead.<\/p>\n
As the president mulls a proposal to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III<\/a> of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) sent out an action alert on Monday emphasizing that the modest reform would not end marijuana criminalization or repair the harms of prohibition.<\/p>\n The group referenced Trump\u2019s prior comments on how nobody should be incarcerated over low-level marijuana possession, which is \u201cwhy his administration must remove it from the CSA completely.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut if his administration instead moves marijuana to Schedule III, it would still leave it criminalized under federal law\u2014allowing people to continue being arrested and incarcerated for marijuana-related conduct,\u201d DPA\u2019s Cat Packer said. \u201cWhile Schedule III may ease tax burdens for marijuana businesses, that change alone doesn\u2019t address the bigger issue: ordinary people will continue to face punishment for marijuana while large corporations profit.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe know that removing marijuana from the CSA (or descheduling) is the only way to truly end the harms of marijuana prohibition and put people over profits,\u201d the action alert says, linking to a petition<\/a> people can sign that DPA will deliver to the White House \u201cover the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n Most (88%) of Americans support legal marijuana. We can\u2019t let these harms go on!\u201d<\/p>\n The president\u2019s recent remarks announcing that he\u2019d make a decision on rescheduling within weeks has upped the ante among advocates, stakeholders and anti-drug groups.<\/p>\n In contrast with DPA, a coalition of prohibitionist, law enforcement and religious groups\u2014led by Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM)\u2014sent a letter to Trump on Monday that implored him to oppose the cannabis rescheduling proposal<\/a> and leave the drug in Schedule I.<\/p>\n \u2014 Trump endorsed rescheduling on the campaign trail ahead of his second term\u2014as well as industry banking access and a Florida adult-use legalization ballot initiative.<\/p>\n But when he announced an imminent decision on moving marijuana to Schedule III<\/a>, he said we\u2019re \u201conly looking at that\u201d and it\u2019s too \u201cearly\u201d to say how the issue will be decided, adding that \u201cit\u2019s a very complicated subject.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSome people like it.
