Bipartisan congressional lawmakers are urging President Donald Trump to federally reschedule marijuana after he announced that a decision on the issue would come within weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Trump was asked about the proposal to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The president didn\u2019t commit to seeing through the Biden administration-initiated process, which he had pledged to do during last year\u2019s campaign, but instead said he saw both sides of the debate and would be reviewing the reform.<\/p>\n

In response, two House lawmakers\u2014Reps. Dina Titus (D-NV) and Greg Steube (R-FL)\u2014implored the president to act.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarijuana is considered by the fed govt the same as heroin. Its reclassification would be a major step forward for research and business in states like NV where it is legal,\u201d Titus, co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, said.<\/p>\n

Steube said it \u201cmakes zero sense that federal law treats marijuana the same as heroin and LSD. It is even more ridiculous that cocaine is technically classified as less restrictive than marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the administrative process is ongoing, the congressman also said he\u2019d be moving this week to reintroduce a bill to reclassify marijuana to Schedule III<\/a> legislatively.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a common-sense change that will finally allow real scientific research into its medicinal value and ensure our drug laws reflect reality,\u201d he said. \u201cI urge my colleagues and the Trump administration to get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steube was also behind the first cannabis reform bill of the current 119th Congress, filing legislation in February that would protect military veterans from losing government benefits for using medical cannabis in compliance with state law<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Titus, for her part, also signed a letter last. year alongside 20 other lawmakers urging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to \u201cpromptly remove marijuana from Schedule I,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0while recognizing that the agency may have been \u201cnavigating internal disagreement\u201d on the issue.<\/p>\n

After the Biden administration started the rescheduling process, the congresswoman commented that it \u201cmade no sense that marijuana was classified the same as heroin and LSD,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0adding that reclassifying the drug \u201cwill help researchers study the medical benefits of cannabis and legal businesses combat the unregulated black market.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for where Trump lands on the issue, there\u2019s lingering uncertainty.<\/p>\n

While he endorsed rescheduling on the campaign trail, he made his first public remarks on the proposal since taking office during a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people like it. Some people hate it\u2014people hate the whole concept of marijuana, because it does bad for the children [and] it does bad for people that are older than children,\u201d the president said. \u201cBut we\u2019re looking at reclassification, and we\u2019ll make a determination over the next few weeks\u2014and that determination, hopefully, will be the right one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a new political committee that shares the same treasurer as Trump\u2019s own super PAC is\u00a0pushing the president to follow through on rescheduling marijuana<\/a>, releasing an ad that highlights his previous endorsement of the reform on the campaign trail.<\/p>\n

The treasurer of the\u00a0PAC, Charles Gantt, is the same person named as treasurer of Trump\u2019s political committee, MAGA Inc., which\u00a0recently reported receiving $1 million from a marijuana industry PAC<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s supported by multiple major cannabis companies.<\/p>\n

That committee, the American Rights and Reform PAC, separately released ads in May that\u00a0attacked former President Joe Biden\u2019s marijuana policy record<\/a>\u00a0in an apparent attempt to push Trump to go further on the issue.<\/p>\n

Separately, a post that recently circulated on social media appears to show that MAGA Inc., which is also referred to as also called Make America Great Again Inc., itself created an ad that touts Trump\u2019s support for \u201ccommonsense reform\u201d such as removing cannabis from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) and letting states set their own policies.<\/p>\n

The ad ends with the narrator saying \u201cDonald Trump for president,\u201d however, indicating that it may have been prepared prior to the 2024 election.<\/p>\n

The owner of the major gardening supply company Scotts Miracle-Gro recently said Trump has told him directly \u201cmultiple times\u201d since taking office that\u00a0he intends to see through the marijuana rescheduling process<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s former acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also recently predicted that the administration\u00a0will soon \u201cdig in\u201d to the state-federal marijuana policy conflict<\/a>, emphasizing the need to \u201celiminate confusion, not create it\u201d amid the rescheduling push.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Terrence Cole, who was sworn in last month as the new administrator of the DEA,\u00a0declined to include rescheduling on a list of \u201cstrategic priorities\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the agency that instead focused on anti-trafficking enforcement, Mexican cartels, the fentanyl supply chain, drug-fueled violence, cryptocurrency, the dark web and a host of other matters.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s despite the fact that Cole said during a confirmation hearing in April that\u00a0examining the government\u2019s pending marijuana rescheduling proposal would be \u201cone of my first priorities\u201d after taking office<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last week, former White House Press Secretary\u00a0Sean Spicer predicted that Trump would not legalize marijuana<\/a>, though that is a separate issue from the current rescheduling proposal under consideration.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a strategic consulting and research firm associated with Trump\u2014Fabrizio, Lee & Associates, LLC\u2014conducted a survey of registered voters that showed\u00a0a majority of Republicans back a variety of cannabis reforms<\/a>.<\/p>\n
