Do you know your \u201cdrug slangs\u201d? The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has a quiz to put that to the test.<\/p>\n
As part of its efforts to raise awareness about drug culture\u2014with sometimes mixed reviews from those who actually consume controlled substances\u2014DEA recently put out a five-question quiz to assess people\u2019s drug lexicons.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you hear that a young person is trying to buy some \u2018smack,\u2019 would you recognize the slang for heroin?\u201d the agency asked. \u201cDrug traffickers and users adopt different words to hide the fact that they are talking about illegal drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not unlike its drug emoji guide that DEA again recently recirculated<\/a>, the test makes several claims about the terminology used by consumers and sellers that might give those populations pause.<\/p>\n Asked to identify an incorrect slang term for marijuana, the agency provided four options: dope, hyrdo, arnolds and skunk. While outmoded in most contemporary circles, the answer is \u201canrolds,\u201d which DEA said is slang for steroids.<\/p>\n The next question concerns fentanyl, with DEA inquiring which of these four terms\u2014jackpot, squirrel, dragon or rainbow\u2014is a reference to the potent opioid. (The answer, according to DEA, is \u201cjackpot.)<\/p>\n \u201cOther fentanyl slang include: Apache, China Girl, China Town, Dance Fever, Friend, Goodfellas, Great Bear, He-Man, King Ivory, Murder 8, and Tango & Cash,\u201d it said<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cMethamphetamine is referred to with all of the following slang terms except: chalk, blue diamond, speed or yellow bam,\u201d another question poses. Here, DEA said the answer is blue diamond.<\/p>\n The next question is about which \u201cweather phenomenon\u201d is used to refer to cocaine. This one likely won\u2019t throw most for a loop, as it\u2019s commonly understood that cocaine is often called \u201csnow,\u201d as opposed to DEA\u2019s other options of \u201cthunder,\u201d \u201churricane\u201d and \u201chail.\u201d<\/p>\n Here\u2019s the last question: \u201cWhich of the following, seemingly harmless terms, is slang for ecstasy\/MDMA (Molly)? Space Bunny, Disco Biscuit, Rollercoaster or Beach Ball.\u201d<\/p>\n The answer here is \u201cDisco Biscuit.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn addition, ecstasy can be called: Adam, Beans, Clarity, E, Eve, Go, Hug Drug, Lover\u2019s Speed, Peace, STP, X, and XTC,\u201d DEA said.<\/p>\n The promotion of the quiz comes days after DEA market \u201cWorld Emoji Day\u201d by again promoting its guide to \u201cdecode\u201d symbols that it claims are associated with illegal drug use and sales<\/a>.<\/p>\n DEA\u2019s\u00a0emoji decoding guide has been around, and somewhat updated, since 2021,<\/a>\u00a0drawing some criticism from consumers who\u2019ve questioned the credibility of the agency\u2019s interpretation of how people communicate about drugs in texts and social media.<\/p>\n DEA, which is currently involved in a process to consider rescheduling marijuana\u2014has long been considered out of touch with youth culture as it concerns drug use and sales. And it\u2019s been partnering with other anti-drug groups recently that hasn\u2019t done much to disabuse the public of that perception.<\/p>\n For instance, to mark \u201cNational Prevention Week,\u201d DEA promoted a campaign in May that encourages people to share memes with dubious claims about the effects of cannabis\u2014including the theory that it is a \u201cgateway drug\u201d to using other substances<\/a>.<\/p>\n In 2023, DEA also advised young people that,\u00a0rather than doing drugs, they should focus on becoming Instagram influencers<\/a>. The agency promoted tips on how to get a \u201cnatural high\u201d as an alternative to drugs, sharing what it said were \u201c7 Better Highs\u201d such as becoming famous on Instagram, playing video games and going to a pet store to look at animals.<\/p>\n Beyond its youth prevention outreach efforts, DEA is considering a proposal to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).<\/p>\n President Donald Trump said this week that his administration will decide soon on the marijuana rescheduling proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n The DEA judge overseeing the process retired effective August 1, however, leaving the rescheduling-related decisions to the newly confirmed DEA administrator, Terrance Cole,<\/a> who declined to put cannabis reform in his agency\u2019s initial list of priorities<\/a> despite telling senators it would be among the top items on his agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n Ahead of Cole\u2019s swearing-in last month, the Senate a day earlier gave final approval to the Trump nominee.
