Newly published research on cannabidiol (CBD) suggests that the popular marijuana component could be a promising treatment for a common type of vaginal infection.<\/p>\n
The report focuses on the bacterium Gardnerella vaginalis<\/em>, which is found naturally in the vagina but can also cause vaginosis when out of balance with other microbes. In laboratory tests, CBD demonstrated antibacterial and antioxidant effects that weakened G. vaginalis<\/em> and eliminated communities of the bacteria known as biofilms.<\/p>\n \u201cOur study shows that CBD exhibits antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against G. vaginalis<\/em> clinical isolates,\u201d the new paper says, \u201cand is thus a potential drug for the treatment of vaginosis caused by this bacterium.\u201d<\/p>\n The article was published this month in a special issue of the journal Antibiotics dedicated to \u201cAntimicrobial and Antibiofilm Activity by Natural Compounds.\u201d It was authored by a four-person team from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, also in Jerusalem, Israel.<\/p>\n \u201cImportantly, CBD not only prevented the biofilm formation of G. vaginalis<\/em> but also reduced the metabolic activity and biofilm biomass of preformed, mature biofilms,\u201d authors wrote, adding that \u201cthe ability of the drug not only to prevent biofilm formation but also to act on preformed mature biofilms\u201d constitutes an \u201cimportant requirement for the successful treatment\u201d of vaginosis caused by the bacterium.<\/p>\n \u201cCBD has antibacterial and antibiofilm activities against the Gram-variable G. vaginalis, which is an opportunistic pathogen associated with bacterial vaginosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n G. vaginalis<\/em> is not the only bacterium that can cause vaginosis, the paper acknowledges, but among 30 tested species, it was \u201cfound to be the most common and virulent species.\u201d<\/p>\n The team noted that their research appears to be the first inquiry into CBD\u2019s effects on the bacterium.<\/p>\n While the findings are promising, the team noted that a chief limitation of the study is that it\u2019s an in vitro study\u2014examining the effects of CBD on bacteria in a petri dish, not a living organism.<\/p>\n \u201cFurther studies,\u201d their paper says, \u201cshould focus on the in vivo efficacy of CBD in treating bacterial vaginosis and detecting any possible toxicity in animal models before conducting human clinical trials in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n The new study<\/a> adds to a growing body of research indicating that cannabinoids might be useful in antibacterial applications.<\/p>\n A review published last year, for example, found that cannabis oil may help promote the healing of skin wounds<\/a>, finding that it offers \u201cpromising benefits\u201d despite a need to better optimize product formulations.<\/p>\n The report, by researchers at universities in India and Thailand, looked specifically at how cannabis oil can reduce so-called \u201creactive oxygen species\u201d (ROS) during the healing of wounds.
