Phil Murphy\u00a0signed the law\u00a0in September.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Sophie Nieto-Mu\u00f1oz, New Jersey Monitor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hemp companies suing New Jersey over a law that bans intoxicating hemp product sales are in \u201congoing discussions\u201d that could resolve the dispute, according to a recent court <a href=\"https:\/\/newjerseymonitor.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1-9-25-Hemp-lawsuit-potential-deal.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filing<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Several hemp companies appealed after a federal judge upheld most of the hemp law that went into effect in October, although the state\u2019s cannabis regulatory agency said it couldn\u2019t enforce some of the regulations due to the decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, the parties will file status reports every 60 days to the judge overseeing the case about any \u201cpotential developments\u201d in their attempts to end the legal challenge, an attorney for the state told the judge earlier this month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New Jersey\u2019s hemp law has\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-jersey-hemp-industry-in-limbo-after-court-decision-upholding-state-ban-on-product-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">prompted confusion<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-jersey-hemp-industry-in-limbo-after-court-decision-upholding-state-ban-on-product-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a0among business owners and state officials<\/a> since Gov. Phil Murphy (D) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-jersey-governor-signs-controversial-bill-restricting-sales-of-hemp-cannabinoid-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">signed the law<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-jersey-governor-signs-controversial-bill-restricting-sales-of-hemp-cannabinoid-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u00a0in September<\/a>. Murphy said he agreed with some of the concerns that led lawmakers to pass the bill\u2014they said children could easily buy products with thousands of milligrams of unregulated THC, the chemical compound in cannabis\u2014but Murphy said he believed some provisions of the legislation were too vague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The law requires hemp businesses to apply for licenses through the state Cannabis Regulatory Commission to sell, manufacture and distribute hemp. The law would also open liquor license holders up to selling hemp products if they obtain a license from the commission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hemp business\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">filed suit<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> shortly after the law was signed, arguing it is unconstitutionally vague.
