Andy Beshear (D) spoke to CNN on Tuesday about rumors that he\u2019s being eyed as a potential running mate if Vice President Kamala Harris becomes the party\u2019s presidential nominee. While he largely waved off the speculation, he said he\u2019s been \u201chappy to work with her on a number of initiatives, including decriminalizing marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cannabis comment was the governor\u2019s first policy-related response to the question about the potential nominee shakeup, which follows the first presidential debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump in which the incumbent drastically underperformed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho would have ever thought on their bingo card you\u2019d end up with the vice president, the governor of Kentucky and Fat Joe at an event in the White House pushing for something that needs to happen?\u201d Beshear said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/watch-live-vp-harris-talks-marijuana-ahead-of-white-house-meeting-with-cannabis-pardon-recipients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referencing a roundtable he participated in with Harris and the rapper in March<\/a> to hear from federal marijuana pardon recipients.<\/p>\n<p>While the governor touted work on \u201cdecriminalizing\u201d marijuana in the CNN interview\u2014and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kamala-harris-says-we-need-to-legalize-marijuana-for-first-time-since-joining-biden-ticket-signaling-potential-shift-ahead-of-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harris did call for legalizing cannabis at the White House event<\/a>\u2014so far the administration\u2019s reform actions have been mostly limited to pardons and a push to reschedule the plant in a way that would not remove criminal penalties.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Beshear, meanwhile,\u00a0has been vocal about his support for cannabis reform,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kentucky-governor-signs-medical-marijuana-legalization-bill-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">signing a medical marijuana legalization bill into law in Kentucky<\/a> last year and before that taking executive action to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kentucky-governor-signs-executive-order-creating-new-medical-marijuana-workgroup-while-launching-website-on-legalization-implementation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">legally protect patients who possess medical cannabis purchased at out-of-state licensed retailers<\/a>\u00a0by exercising his unilateral authority to grant pardons to anyone who meets certain criteria.<\/p>\n<p>After Biden issued his first pardon proclamation in October 2022, Beshear said he was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kentucky-governor-actively-considering-marijuana-pardons-after-bidens-federal-action-urging-people-to-apply-for-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u201cactively considering\u201d possible marijuana clemency actions<\/a>\u00a0the state could take and encouraged people to petition for relief in the interim. In 2021, he also talked about his desire to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kentucky-governor-wants-to-let-farmers-sell-marijuana-to-other-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">let Kentucky farmers grow and sell recreational cannabis across state lines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As of this month, Kentuckians are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/applications-for-kentucky-medical-cannabis-business-licenses-are-now-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">now officially able to submit applications for medical cannabis business licenses<\/a> under the legislation the governor signed into law. If passed, it would have legalized and regulated cannabis for adults 21 and older, though it did not advance in the state\u2019s Republican-controlled legislature this session.<\/p>\n<p>A more limited legalization measure, HB 72, was introduced in January by Rep. Nima Kulkarni (D). It would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-kentucky-bill-would-legalize-marijuana-use-possession-and-home-cultivation-but-not-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">end all penalties for simple possession and use of marijuana by adults 21 and older<\/a>\u00a0and also allow adults to grow a small number of cannabis plants at home. Commercial sales, however, would remain prohibited. It too died, however.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Kulkarni\u00a0introduced a measure that would have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/kentucky-lawmakers-bill-would-put-marijuana-legalization-on-the-ballot-for-voters-to-decide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">let voters decide whether to legalize use, possession and home cultivation<\/a>.
