{"id":76190,"date":"2024-06-11T04:35:51","date_gmt":"2024-06-11T12:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2024\/06\/11\/california-senators-approve-bill-to-legalize-marijuana-cafes-where-people-could-smoke-eat-food-and-watch-events-such-as-concerts\/"},"modified":"2024-06-11T12:46:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-11T20:46:35","slug":"california-senators-approve-bill-to-legalize-marijuana-cafes-where-people-could-smoke-eat-food-and-watch-events-such-as-concerts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2024\/06\/11\/california-senators-approve-bill-to-legalize-marijuana-cafes-where-people-could-smoke-eat-food-and-watch-events-such-as-concerts\/","title":{"rendered":"California Senators Approve Bill To Legalize Marijuana Cafes Where People Could Smoke, Eat Food And Watch Events Such As Concerts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/MM_Bill_Tracker_V5_blank-53.jpg\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\"> <\/p>\n<p>A California Senate panel has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-lawmakers-approve-bill-to-legalize-marijuana-cafes-months-after-governors-veto-of-earlier-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved a bill to legalize cannabis cafes in the state<\/a>, months after the governor vetoed a previous iteration of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee passed the legislation in a 9-2 vote on Monday, about three weeks after it cleared the full Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Assemblymember Matt Haney (D) is again sponsoring the proposal, which would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-lawmaker-revives-bill-to-legalize-marijuana-cafes-months-after-governors-veto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allow on-site marijuana consumption at licensed businesses<\/a> that could also offer non-cannabis food and non-alcoholic drinks and host live events such as concerts if they get permission from their local government.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed the prior version, saying that while he appreciated that the intent was to \u201cprovide cannabis retailers with increased business opportunities and an avenue to attract new customers,\u201d he felt \u201cconcerned this bill could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-governor-vetoes-cannabis-cafe-and-marijuana-labeling-bills-but-signs-others-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undermine California\u2019s long-standing smoke-free workplace protections<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting the health and safety of workers is paramount,\u201d the governor said at the time. \u201cI encourage the author to address this concern in subsequent legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to senators on Monday, Haney clarified that his bill this bill does not legalize consumption lounges but instead would let marijuana businesses add new streams of revenue to those facilities that are already in operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumption lounges currently exist throughout the state of California if authorized by the local government, and people are actively consuming cannabis at these lounges,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, what is currently not allowed under existing law, completely prohibited, is the ability for cannabis retailers to diversify their business by selling food, drinks and an experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cannabis industry is struggling.
