President Joe Biden\u2019s strategy to win reelection this November is \u201cto get more people to smoke marijuana,\u201d a GOP senator is claiming.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Ask a Pol that was published on Friday, Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) said he thinks the administration\u2019s move to reschedule cannabis is a \u201cterrible idea\u201d that fits into a political agenda heading into the election.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to me the number of stories I\u2019ve already read that this is Biden\u2019s plan to be able to win the election is to get more people to smoke marijuana,\u201d he said. \u201cI was like, okay, well, that\u2019s quite a plan, \u2018I can only win the election when more people smoke marijuana.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a bad idea, and I think it sends all the wrong message about the drug use in our country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Biden campaign has made clear they view the push to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) as a politically appealing action, contrasting it with the Trump administration\u2019s decision to rescind federal cannabis enforcement guidance<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n However, rescheduling would not legalize marijuana or legitimize state markets<\/a>. There would still be significant criminal penalties for cannabis-related activities under federal law, so it\u2019s unclear what Lankford means by suggesting it would incentivize use.<\/p>\n \u201cMarijuana doesn\u2019t make our families stronger, it doesn\u2019t make our workplaces more efficient, it doesn\u2019t make our streets safer,\u201d Lankford went on to say<\/a> in the Ask a Pol interview. \u201cSo to say that the solution for the election for Biden is to get more people to smoke marijuana, I find very bizarre.\u201d<\/p>\n The senator also claimed that Colorado\u2019s legalization law \u201ccreated greater criminal activity\u201d and that his home state of Oklahoma\u2019s medical marijuana program has invited \u201call kinds of outside criminal organizations that have moved in to be able to do redistribution of drugs in our state, and it\u2019s been a terrible consequence for our state.\u201d<\/p>\n Last September, Lankford also led a letter urging the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to \u201creject\u201d the top federal health agency\u2019s recommendation to reschedule marijuana<\/a> and instead keep it in Schedule I.<\/p>\n More recently, the senator called on U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to \u201creverse\u201d its updated policy that narrows the window of employment ineligibility<\/a> over past marijuana use from two years to three months, arguing that it \u201cundermines the security and integrity of the Border Patrol workforce\u201d and questioning the \u201ctrustworthiness\u201d of recruits who used cannabis.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the Biden administration\u2019s proposed rule to federally reschedule marijuana was officially posted on Tuesday, kicking off a public comment period that\u2019s expected to elicit a major response<\/a> from supporters and opponents of cannabis reform alike.<\/p>\n Police Groups Back Bill To End Federal Marijuana Prohibition In Legal States And Allow Interstate Commerce<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n Photo courtesy of Philip Steffan<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n The post Biden\u2019s Reelection Strategy Is To \u2018Get More People To Smoke Marijuana,\u2019 GOP Senator Claims<\/a> appeared first on Marijuana Moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n
