Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed the prior version, saying that while he appreciated that the intent was to \u201cprovide cannabis retailers with increased business opportunities and an avenue to attract new customers,\u201d he felt \u201cconcerned this bill could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-governor-vetoes-cannabis-cafe-and-marijuana-labeling-bills-but-signs-others-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undermine California\u2019s long-standing smoke-free workplace protections<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtecting the health and safety of workers is paramount,\u201d the governor said at the time. \u201cI encourage the author to address this concern in subsequent legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the Assembly floor on Monday, Haney said the new legislation \u201csupports our legal small businesses that just want to diversify their businesses and do the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe illicit illegal market is continuing to grow and thrive while our legal cannabis market is struggling,\u201d he said. \u201cSmall businesses and local governments that want to authorize simply allowing existing cannabis lounges\u2014which already exist in law\u2014to be able to serve food should be able to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker said he and other supporters of the current bill have been working to address the governor\u2019s concerns with the prior version, saying that \u201cwe\u2019ve already taken a number of amendments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014<br \/>\nMarijuana Moment is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracking more than 900 cannabis, psychedelics and drug policy bills<\/a> in state legislatures and Congress this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patreon supporters<\/a> pledging at least $25\/month get access to our interactive maps, charts and hearing calendar so they don\u2019t miss any developments.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9128 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/MM_Bill_Tracker_V5_blank-100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nLearn more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana bill tracker<\/a> and become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporter on Patreon<\/a> to get access.<br \/>\n\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>New changes create a \u201cseparation,\u201d he said, between public consumption spaces and back rooms of businesses where food is prepared or stored in order to better protection the health of workers in line with the governor\u2019s concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> would also allow local governments to decide whether to allow cannabis cafes to operate instead of automatically legalizing them statewide.<\/p>\n<p>The bill makes explicitly clear that hemp-based food items or drinks are not considered \u201cnon-cannabis\u201d products that could be sold at the cafes.
