States have carried out \u201cgreat experiments\u201d with marijuana legalization that have given Americans \u201cmore freedoms,\u201d including in conservative jurisdictions, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says.<\/p>\n
As Schumer continues to push for cannabis banking legislation and a legalization bill he recently unveiled, the senator was asked on Wednesday whether there\u2019s a policy disconnect between his advocacy for marijuana reform and his call for a crackdown on the nicotine product Zyn.<\/p>\n
The majority leader didn\u2019t directly address the question but said generally that \u201cthe bottom line is that there have been great experiments in the states on legalization of marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCrime hasn\u2019t gone up. Drug addiction hasn\u2019t gone up. People have more freedoms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think overwhelmingly the American people support decriminalization,\u201d Schumer said. \u201cEven in conservative states, it\u2019s on the ballot\u2014look at Ohio\u2014and it wins overwhelmingly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nWith respect to the Zyn-specific question, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) criticized Schumer in January over what he views as a double-standard with the proposed crackdown.<\/p>\n
After the majority leader asked federal agencies to investigate the health impacts and marketing of the nicotine pouches that have been popularized on social media in a way that he says appeals to youth, Fetterman said he\u00a0opposes Schumer\u2019s position because it\u2019s a matter of \u201cfreedom and personal choices,\u201d<\/a> drawing parallels to his reasons for supporting marijuana legalization.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I am going to have a decision, I\u2019m going to err on the side of more freedom and personal choices and those kinds of things,\u201d Fetterman said. \u201cAnd I made that same argument when I wanted to legalize marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n Schumer didn\u2019t weigh in on the Zyn aspect of the reporter\u2019s question on Wednesday, but he has repeatedly discussed his interest in advancing cannabis policy reform with the remainder of the session.<\/p>\n Last week, for example, the senator signaled he\u2019s not giving up hope on attaching a marijuana banking bill to must-pass aviation legislation<\/a>. But Republican leaders in both chambers represent roadblocks for the reform.<\/p>\n Schumer, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-OR), Sen.
