The White House has declined to say whether President Joe Biden personally supports the Justice Department\u2019s plan to reschedule marijuana following a review that he directed.<\/p>\n
Speaking with reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about the president\u2019s position on DOJ\u2019s plans to move cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III<\/a> of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re going to let that review process continue, so I\u2019m not going to get ahead of that,\u201d she said, adding that Biden has been \u201cvery clear\u201d that he \u201cdoesn\u2019t believe any American that possesses marijuana only should go to jail.\u201d<\/p>\n Jean-Pierre has repeatedly avoided commenting directing on the administration\u2019s position on the specific rescheduling proposal. However, she said last week that the review the president directed is part of fulfilling the pledge he made to voters in the 2020 election<\/a>.<\/p>\n Biden has issued two rounds of mass pardons for people who\u2019ve committed federal marijuana possession offenses. A Schedule III reclassification would not legalize cannabis or free people still incarcerated over cannabis.<\/p>\n It should also be noted that, during his run for the presidency, Biden pledged to move cannabis to Schedule II<\/a>\u2014a stricter category compared to what\u2019s been proposed by his administration.<\/p>\n In any case, the press secretary said on Wednesday that the president\u2019s stance on the issue is why he directed\u201d the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Justice Department \u201cto review rescheduling marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re doing that\u2014that process has moved, right? [It] went through HHS, now it\u2019s at DOJ. I just don\u2019t want to get ahead of that,\u201d Jean-Pierre said<\/a>.<\/p>\n The White House has also so far been unwilling to confirm where the rescheduling proposal is in the process. While the press secretary said it\u2019s with DOJ, the Justice Department confirmed that the review is complete. The expectation is that it should have been submitted to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review before it\u2019s published in the Federal Register and opened up for public comment.<\/p>\n The head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also told lawmakers during a committee hearing on Tuesday that it would be \u201cinappropriate\u201d for her to comment on the agency\u2019s recent marijuana rescheduling determination<\/a> because the rulemaking process is \u201congoing.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2014 The press secretary also said last month that\u00a0Biden has been \u201cvery, very clear\u201d about his support for decriminalizing marijuana<\/a>. Days earlier, Jean-Pierre reiterated that HHS made its rescheduling recommendation to DEA\u00a0based on a review that was \u201cguided by evidence [and] by science,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0which is \u201cwhat we believe here in this administration.\u201d<\/p>\n In any case, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have also become\u00a0increasingly vocal about marijuana policy reform actions in the lead-up to the November election<\/a>.<\/p>\n Separately, the top Democrat in the U.S. House said last week that the Biden administration\u2019s move to reschedule marijuana is a \u201cstep in the right direction,\u201d but it should be\u00a0followed up with congressional action such as passing the legalization bill<\/a>\u00a0Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) filed.<\/p>\n On the opposite side of the spectrum, a Republican senator said that marijuana is a \u201cgateway drug,\u201d and Democrats\u2019 moves to legalize it\u00a0reflect \u201cpro-criminal, anti-American policies\u201d that will \u201cstimulate more crime on American streets.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0He also argued that cannabis banking legislation \u201cfacilitates an entire infrastructure and an ecosystem for more drug usage in America.\u201d<\/p>\n Marijuana Seizures At U.S.\u2013Mexico Border Continue To Fall As More States Legalize, Federal Data Shows<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n The post White House Declines To Say Whether Biden Supports Marijuana Rescheduling Proposal From DOJ<\/a> appeared first on Marijuana Moment<\/a>.<\/p>\n
