Meanwhile nearly two thirds (64 percent) said that \u201cmarijuana no longer carries the stigma it used to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe numbers speak volumes,\u201d Libby Rodney, chief strategy officer and resident futurist at The Harris Poll, a market research and consulting company, said in a statement about the group\u2019s findings. \u201cWith 4 in 10 Americans using marijuana, it\u2019s not a trend\u2014it\u2019s a cultural shift. What was once taboo is now mainstream, reflecting changing attitudes and norms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about usage; it\u2019s about acceptance,\u201d Rodney said, \u201csignaling a new era in how we perceive and interact with this once controversial substance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-nine percent of those surveyed said they were \u201csurprised marijuana hasn\u2019t been legalized across the United States yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results come on the heels of a separate Gallup poll this week indicating that rates of marijuana use are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/americans-use-marijuana-at-nearly-the-same-rate-in-legal-and-non-legal-states-suggesting-criminalization-doesnt-curtail-consumption-gallup-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly the same in states that have legalized marijuana versus those that still prohibit it<\/a>, which Gallup said suggests \u201ccriminalization does little to curtail its use.\u201d That survey found that 1 in 10 adults reported using marijuana 10 or more times in the past month, while 1 in 5 used cannabis at least once in the past month.<\/p>\n<p>The Harris Poll findings are from a March 22\u201324 online survey of 2,043 U.S. adults.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96412\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96412\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96412\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-19-at-10.13.36-1024x576-1.png\" alt=\"Four in 10 Americans use marijuana, including a quarter of those who use iton a weekly basis\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-96412\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harris Poll<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Among the poll\u2019s other findings, the survey showed that more than seven in 10 people who use marijuana reported preferring it over both cigarettes and alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>People were also asked about what they would give up to make or keep marijuana legal for adult use. Among millennials, nearly half (45 percent) said they\u2019d give up alcohol, for example, while 34 percent said they\u2019d give up coffee and 32 percent said they\u2019d give up social media. Younger Gen Z respondents, by comparison, were less likely to give up any of those indulgences in favor of marijuana (alcohol: 38 percent; coffee: 25 percent; social media: 21 percent).<\/p>\n<p>More than a quarter of respondents (27 percent) reported living in a jurisdiction where cannabis is legal for medical and adult use, while 13 percent said marijuana was completely illegal and 13 percent said only medical was legal (although another 9 percent said medical was legal and adult use was decriminalized).<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four percent of respondents said they weren\u2019t sure of the legal status of marijuana in their location.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96418\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96418\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96418\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-19-at-10.23.30-1024x576-1.png\" alt=\"The future is green: Marijuana gains ground over alcohol and cigarettes, asmost users favor it over other stimulants\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-96418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harris Poll<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pollsters also said their findings show that zero-tolerance workplace marijuana policies \u201care losing their grip on the workplace,\u201d with 38 percent of respondents reporting that their workplace has a zero-tolerance policy.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, 15 percent said use for medical reasons was permitted outside work hours, while 23 percent said either medical or adult use were allowed.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly a quarter (24 percent) said they were unsure of their workplace\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n<p>Employees, meanwhile, \u201care looking for jobs that follow suit,\u201d The Harris Poll said, with 1 in 5 saying they\u2019ve left an employer due to their marijuana use policy.<\/p>\n<p>Two thirds (66 percent) of Americans reported thinking marijuana products are overpriced\u2014a number that jumped to 79 percent among marijuana users and 82 percent among heavy users.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/State-of-Marijuana-April-2024.pdf?fbclid=IwAR1n2d8kj_JF0rBLjzYZ0yk9G1u5iSJq0eOQfiODd1tyYmFnc4F-RYWkTLA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> itself showing that perceptions are changing, Americans are still hesitant to share their marijuana habits. Nearly two thirds (64 percent) of marijuana users said they\u2019re selective about revealing use, with more than half (56 percent) saying they \u201cwouldn\u2019t disclose my marijuana usage on the first few dates.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96423\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96423\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96423\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-19-at-10.49.21-1024x578-1.png\" alt=\"For some Americans, marijuana is a make or break for relationships, realestate, and even the job search, especially for the younger generations\" width=\"740\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-96423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harris Poll<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking forward, most Americans think cannabis reform will continue in the country, with 64 percent saying that it \u201cwon\u2019t be long before marijuana is fully legalized.\u201d The same proportion said 2024 would be \u201ca good year for the marijuana industry,\u201d while 56 percent said the industry \u201cwill fuel the American economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for whether to structure legalization in a way that benefits those most harmed by the drug war, a majority (56 percent) said that \u201csocial equity programs should be implemented to address historical injustices related to marijuana criminalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That includes 68 percent of Democrats surveyed and 46 percent of Republicans.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96422\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96422\" class=\"size-large wp-image-96422\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-2024-04-19-at-10.45.56-1024x575-1.png\" alt=\"With most Americans foreseeing popularity and accessibility, there is a strongbelief marijuana will be as prevalent as alcohol in the future\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-96422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Harris Poll<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While a minority of Americans report regularly using marijuana, polls have consistently found that there\u2019s increasingly bipartisan majority support for legalizing cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>For example, nine in 10 Americans say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/only-one-out-of-ten-americans-wants-to-keep-marijuana-totally-illegal-pew-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana should be legal for recreational or medical purposes<\/a>, a Pew Research Center poll that was released last month found. And most agree that legalization bolsters local economies and makes the criminal justice system more fair.<\/p>\n<p>An earlier Gallup poll from last year, meanwhile, found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/support-for-marijuana-legalization-reaches-record-high-of-70-percent-including-strong-majority-of-republicans-gallup-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support for marijuana legalization reached a new record high nationally<\/a>, with seven in 10 Americans\u2014including a sizable majority of Republicans, Democrats and independents\u2014backing an end to prohibition.<\/p>\n<p>Another survey released last month found that a strong majority of voters in three states\u2014including more than 60 percent of Republicans\u2014support congressional legislation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bipartisan-majorities-want-congress-to-pass-bill-protecting-states-rights-to-legalize-marijuana-poll-of-voters-in-three-states-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect states\u2019 rights to set their own marijuana laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pew also released a separate report in February that found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/eight-in-ten-americans-have-a-marijuana-dispensary-in-their-county-and-shops-cluster-near-borders-with-illegal-states-pew-analysis-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eight in 10 Americans now live in a county with at least one marijuana dispensary<\/a>.
