As the state approaches the one-year anniversary of the first adult-use marijuana sales, regulators took to social media on Tuesday to tout the fact that they\u2019ve now completed \u201cthe first application round in the nation that is designated exclusively for social equity applicants across all license types and categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-regulators-are-now-accepting-marijuana-license-applications-from-social-equity-businesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social equity license lottery expands Maryland\u2019s cannabis industry<\/a> and provides social equity businesses with new economic opportunities in the State,\u201d MCA Director Will Tilburg said. \u201cI would like to thank the Moore-Miller Administration, the Maryland General Assembly and the Office of Social Equity for their continued support in this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MCA Office of Social Equity Executive Director Audrey Johnson said the lottery <a href=\"https:\/\/mmcc.maryland.gov\/Pages\/Cannabis-Business-Licensing.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">results<\/a> \u201caffirm our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the cannabis industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to see a significant representation of Black individuals, as well as women, among the selected applicants,\u201d she said. \u201cThis milestone underscores our ongoing dedication to providing access for Marylanders who were most harmed by the war on drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MCAdminOfficial\/posts\/pfbid023CtZ9rX4YDCAj7dvjQYAifm8eB5RFEynQrNbHrSQU57R9QNC7Ft9GkG3Z9QPbKxRl\" data-width=\"552\" \/>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Maryland regulators have consistently promoted the state\u2019s equity-centered approach to implementing legalization, which included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marylands-first-adult-use-marijuana-license-applications-will-open-for-social-equity-businesses-in-november-regulators-announce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exclusively opening up initial licensing applications to businesses owned by people<\/a> who\u2019ve lived in a designated \u201cdisproportionately impacted area\u201d for at least five years.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the application round, MCA launched an online portal that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-launches-marijuana-social-equity-business-portal-to-check-eligibility-ahead-of-license-application-window\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allowed people to check their eligibility for a social equity marijuana business license<\/a> before regulators started approving them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014<br \/>\n<strong>Marijuana Moment is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tracking more than 1,400 cannabis, psychedelics and drug policy bills<\/a> in state legislatures and Congress this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Patreon supporters<\/a> pledging at least $25\/month get access to our interactive maps, charts and hearing calendar so they don\u2019t miss any developments.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9128 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/MM_Bill_Tracker_V5_blank-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Learn more about our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana bill tracker<\/a> and become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supporter on Patreon<\/a> to get access.<br \/>\n\u2014<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Maryland House of Delegates committee considered a Republican-led bill in February that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-democrats-push-back-against-gop-bill-to-let-police-to-search-vehicles-over-marijuana-odor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reinstate the ability of law enforcement to stop and search vehicles over the smell of marijuana<\/a>. Democrats pushed back strongly against the proposal, however, noting the state\u2019s history of police disproportionately stopping people of color.<\/p>\n<p>Also that month, committees in both Maryland\u2019s Senate and House heard testimony on legislation that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-lawmakers-debate-bills-to-protect-marijuana-consumers-from-workplace-discrimination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect workers from being penalized for off-duty marijuana use<\/a>. Under the measures, employers would instead have to demonstrate that an individual was impaired while on the clock in order to fire them or take other adverse action.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate additionally passed a bill in February that\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-senate-approves-bill-to-protect-medical-marijuana-patients-gun-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meant to protect gun rights for medical marijuana patients under state law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maryland\u2019s marijuana market has proved popular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/maryland-saw-marijuana-market-spike-in-december-setting-new-monthly-record-to-cap-off-787-5-million-in-2023-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with the state seeing month-over-month record-breaking sales<\/a> throughout 2023. Overall sales of cannabis in Maryland reached $96.5 million in December alone.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, lawmakers sent Gov.
