{"id":73017,"date":"2024-03-06T11:16:56","date_gmt":"2024-03-06T19:16:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2024\/03\/06\/cbd-is-safe-for-long-term-use-in-dogs-national-animal-supplement-council-concludes-after-funding-comprehensive-study\/"},"modified":"2024-03-06T19:46:24","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T03:46:24","slug":"cbd-is-safe-for-long-term-use-in-dogs-national-animal-supplement-council-concludes-after-funding-comprehensive-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2024\/03\/06\/cbd-is-safe-for-long-term-use-in-dogs-national-animal-supplement-council-concludes-after-funding-comprehensive-study\/","title":{"rendered":"CBD Is \u2018Safe For Long-Term Use\u2019 In Dogs, National Animal Supplement Council Concludes After Funding \u2018Comprehensive\u2019 Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>The National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) is promoting a new study that it says shows CBD is \u201csafe for long-term use\u201d in dogs\u2014a significant finding given emerging research that cannabis can effectively treat conditions such as anxiety and certain skin diseases among canines.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science last week, found that a variety of cannabinoids, including CBD, CBDA and CBG, were \u201cwell-tolerated\u201d in healthy dogs at a dose of 5\u2009milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day.<\/p>\n<p>To investigate the issue, researchers designed a randomized, 90-day repeat dose study with a two-week recovery period. Thirty-two healthy dogs were given either a placebo, CBD, CBD+CBG or CBD+CBDA and tested weekly for body weight, food consumption and clinical pathologies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannabinoids were well tolerated when healthy male and female beagles were dosed for 90 consecutive days,\u201d the study found. \u201cBased on the data available it would be the conclusion of the authors that the substances do not pose significant risk to dogs in long-term use.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thenasc\/posts\/pfbid0hEGJkCHkswmkPDfDinSXeSGee4VR43f8xb3Kq71v5Bw2xcGwXbAzwZJ46SZ8MyDjl\" data-width=\"552\" \/>\n<p>In addition to the trial involving the 32 beagles, the study also involved a separate analysis of more than 10 years of post-market surveillance data from the NASC Adverse Event Reporting Database (NAERS), a robust monitoring system that tracks supplements given to companion animals.<\/p>\n<p>From 2010 to 2023, the rate of adverse events for CBD was 2.1 for every one million administrations and 0.01 serious adverse events for every one million administrations.<\/p>\n<p>NASC President Bill Bookout, whose group funded the study, said in a press release on Tuesday that the results show the cannabis components that were examined \u201care safe for long-term use in healthy dogs when given at the dose studied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith safety studies, no matter how well controlled or meticulously defined, it is impossible to account for everything that can occur when a product is commercialized. That is why this safety study includes not only data from a well-designed study protocol, but also 10 years of post-market surveillance data,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20240305878251\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cNo other study that we are aware of is as comprehensive and includes both data sets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fvets.2024.1349590\/full?utm_source=F-NTF&amp;utm_medium=EMLX&amp;utm_campaign=PRD_FEOPS_20170000_ARTICLE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> adds to the growing scientific literature around cannabis and canines.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A study has published results from the first-of-its-kind peer-reviewed safety study of cannabidiol products in healthy dogs. In the study, different cannabinoids were well tolerated in healthy male and female dogs when dosed for 90 consecutive days with a 14-day recovery period.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 US Hemp Roundtable (@HempRoundtable) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HempRoundtable\/status\/1765416198148112413?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">March 6, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>For example, another recent case study found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cannabis-may-be-viable-alternative-treatment-for-dogs-with-common-skin-disease-case-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cannabis appears to be a \u201cviable alternative\u201d treatment option for dogs<\/a> suffering from a common skin disease\u2014especially if they experience adverse side effects from conventional steroid therapies.<\/p>\n<p>A study that was published in January found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/dogs-given-cbd-see-significant-reductions-in-stress-and-anxiety-related-to-riding-in-cars-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">dogs that receive daily doses of CBD see \u201csignificant reductions\u201d in stress and anxiety<\/a>\u00a0related to car travel.<\/p>\n<p>Other studies have demonstrated benefits of CBD such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/dogs-treated-with-cannabis-oil-experience-less-frequent-seizures-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">reduced frequency of seizures among dogs who receive the cannabinoid<\/a>. Also, a study published in 2018 found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/dogs-with-arthritis-benefit-from-cannabis-oil-study-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">dogs with arthritis see improvements with CBD treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cows-that-are-fed-hemp-cake-retain-safe-levels-of-thc-and-cbd-in-their-meat-usda-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">cows that are fed hempseed cake retain very low concentrations of THC and CBD<\/a>\u00a0in their bodies, indicating that meat products from hemp-fed cattle are safe for human consumption.<\/p>\n<p>Another federally funded study published in 2022 found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/feeding-cows-hemp-helps-them-chill-out-federally-funded-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">feeding cows hemp reduces their stress<\/a>.
