NBA All-Star Kevin Durant says he personally lobbied the league\u2019s commissioner to get marijuana removed from the banned substances list for players\u2014and during one meeting, he said the official caught a whiff of cannabis on him.<\/p>\n

At a CNBC and Boardroom \u201cGame Plan\u201d sports business conference on Tuesday, Durant was asked how he managed to \u201cpersuade\u201d Commissioner Adam Silver to lift the cannabis ban. He started by noting that \u201che smelled it when I walked in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t really have to say much, you know what I\u2019m saying? He kind of understood where this was going,\u201d he said. \u201cI just felt like it was becoming a thing around the country\u2014around the world. The stigma behind it wasn\u2019t as negative as it was before. It doesn\u2019t affect you in any negative way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Durant, who teamed up with the online marijuana marketplace Weedmaps<\/a> on a campaign to destigmatize cannabis, said at the CNBC\u00a0 event<\/a> that the commissioner \u201cagreed\u201d with him. \u201cIt\u2019s the NBA. Everybody does it. It\u2019s like wine at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n

NBA and its players union signed the collective bargaining agreement<\/a> that removed marijuana from the league\u2019s banned substances list for players last month.<\/p>\n

The agreement also lays out rules allowing players to invest in and promote cannabis brands\u2014with certain exceptions.<\/p>\n

The overall elimination of marijuana from NBA\u2019s banned substances list formally codifies what has been the\u00a0league\u2019s decision to temporarily suspend cannabis testing<\/a>\u00a0for the past three seasons.<\/p>\n

Marijuana icon and NBA commentator Snoop Dogg\u00a0weighed in on the policy change in April<\/a>, applauding the league for taking steps that would allow players to use cannabis for medical purposes, including as a potential opioid alternative.<\/p>\n

Michele Roberts, a onetime head of the National Basketball Players Association who also joined the board of the major cannabis company Cresco Labs<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, previously predicted that a formal change to codify the policy could come soon.<\/p>\n

A growing number of sports leagues have taken steps to enact marijuana policy reforms as more states have moved to legalize cannabis.<\/p>\n

The New York Media Softball League (NYMSL)\u2014which has teams representing The Wall Street Journal, High Times and BuzzFeed among its ranks\u2014recently became one of the latest athletic organizations<\/a> to embrace the cannabis industry, launching a new sponsorship deal with a Kentucky-based CBD company.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals\u00a0recently formed a partnership with a cannabis brand<\/a>\u00a0to promote education about the potential therapeutic benefits of CBD\u2014the second Major League Baseball (MLB) team to do so<\/a>\u00a0after the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n

MLB itself announced its league-wide\u00a0partnership with a popular CBD brand last year<\/a>. Charlotte\u2019s Web Holdings, one of the most recognizable hemp-derived CBD companies in the country, signed the deal with league to become the \u201cOfficial CBD of MLB.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) committee focused on promoting health and wellness for student athletes\u00a0has proposed to remove marijuana<\/a>\u00a0from the organization\u2019s banned substances list.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Nevada sports regulators voted to\u00a0send a proposed regulatory amendment to the governor<\/a>\u00a0that would formally protect athletes from\u00a0being penalized over using or possessing marijuana<\/a>\u00a0in compliance with state law.<\/p>\n

UFC announced in 2021 that they would no longer be punishing fighters over positive marijuana tests.<\/p>\n

The National Football League\u2019s (NFL)\u00a0drug testing policy changed demonstrably<\/a>\u00a0in 2020 as part of a collective bargaining agreement.<\/p>\n

NFL and its players union also announced last month that\u00a0they are jointly awarding another round of funding<\/a>\u00a0to support independent research on the therapeutic benefits of CBD as a pain treatment alternative to opioids for players with concussions.<\/p>\n
