Since launching his first collection at Barneys New York two decades ago, Adler has built a cult-like customer base with his covetable, tongue-in-chic ceramics and interior accoutrements. He correctly refers to his gorgeously recognizable design aesthetic as \u201cmodern American glamour.\u201d Bullseye. Checking in on the celebrated designer\u2019s views on drug iconography and the evolution of cannabis paraphernalia was sheer fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cannabis Now: Where does your passion for design come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jonathan Adler: Probably my parents. My dad was a lawyer who spent every spare moment painting and my mother\u2019s ebullient sense of color continues to inspire me to this day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where do you turn for inspiration?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>My weird brain. Inspiration is everywhere\u2014just keep your eyes and your mind wide open.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jonathan-Adler.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Jonathan-Adler.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Adler\" class=\"wp-image-65774\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jonathan Adler.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>What do you love most about your work?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>I love when I\u2019ve created something that doesn\u2019t look like it was designed; it looks like it was <em>uncovered.<\/em> I think my best pieces don\u2019t look like they\u2019re designed; they just look like they\u2019re supposed to be that way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your biggest passions?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say my husband, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simondoonan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simon Doonan<\/a>; but I suppose his diminutive stature disqualifies him. [<em>Laughs<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p><strong>From psychedelic-themed wall tapestries and \u201cchill-pill\u201d cushions to brass pill boxes and ornate pottery, the normalization of drugs has been a recurring theme through numerous collections. What started this journey?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s actually not about courting controversy or normalizing drugs. The truth is, I\u2019m the cleanest living person around. Drug iconography allows me to explore\u2014vicariously\u2014my hedonistic side. I always say I live clean but decorate dirty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What inspires you to push boundaries even further?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>I just make what I want to make and hope that people enjoy it as much as I do.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Druggist-collection.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Druggist-collection.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65773\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Pieces from the <em>Druggist<\/em> collection. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>How did your 2019 Higher Standards collab come about?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/higherstandards.com\/collections\/jonathan-adler-x-higher-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Higher Standards<\/a> approached me about working together, all it took was one look at who they are and what they do to realize they\u2019re not like the headshops of yore. They\u2019re irreverent and glamorous, two things I try to express in my own work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would you describe the collection<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>Saucy, sassy and subversive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve said that you made pottery bongs as a teenager. How important is it to you to combine the two?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I strive to make stuff that you\u2019re going to keep forever and never throw out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve said that your work is often a reflection and commentary on popular culture. In that regard, what do luxury drug-themed accessories say?<\/strong><strong \/><\/p>\n<p>Pot paraphernalia used to be the antithesis of chic\u2014pewter goblins, crystal dragons\u2014and it\u2019s time it got a complete makeover. If it\u2019s going to sit out on your cocktail table, it might as well look good.
