Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) reintroduced the Clean Slate Act last week. The measure would also provide relief to people who have been arrested for other offenses that did not result in a conviction.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation has been filed over the last several sessions, and the previous version <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/congressional-lawmakers-approve-marijuana-record-sealing-and-other-drug-policy-bills-in-key-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advanced through the House Judiciary Committee<\/a> last year. It wasn\u2019t ultimately taken up on the floor, however.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince coming to Congress, the Clean Slate Act has been one of my top priorities,\u201d Blunt Rochester said in a press release. \u201cWith 9 in 10 employers conducting background checks, 4 in 5 landlords, and 3 in 5 universities doing the same, we know just how critical it is to give those who have served their time and paid their debt to society a clean slate and a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I look forward to working with my colleagues across the aisle and across Congress to pass this much-needed legislation to create equitable economic opportunity for millions of Americans. Lisa Blunt Rochester (@RepLBR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepLBR\/status\/1651669701305458688?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 27, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>\u201cAs we continue to face workforce shortages impacting industries across the country and our economy, it\u2019s never been more important to do all we can to create equitable economic opportunity for millions of Americans,\u201d she said. \u201cI look forward to working with my colleagues across the aisle and across Congress to pass this much-needed legislation and send it to President Biden\u2019s desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/2930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bill<\/a> would establish a new process for people to petition the courts for record sealing for non-violent offenses that aren\u2019t eligible for automatic sealing. They could repetition for relief after two years if the court denied their initial request.<\/p>\n<p>Further, district courts would be able to appoint a public defender to assist \u201cindigent petitioners\u201d process their requests for record sealing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Americans, we believe in second chances. We believe in redemption. And we believe in the power of forgiveness,\u201d Mace <a href=\"https:\/\/bluntrochester.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe Clean Slate Act, a bill that would give Americans who have paid their debt to society a fair shot at rebuilding their lives, is needed. Brian Mast (R-FL) introduced legislation last month to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/gop-congressman-files-bill-to-allow-marijuana-consumers-to-buy-guns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protect the Second Amendment rights of people who use marijuana<\/a>\u00a0in legal states, allowing them to purchase and possess firearms that they\u2019re currently prohibited from having under federal law.<\/p>\n<p>Reps.
