But the league will remove drug testing requirements for THC, while allowing players to passively invest in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The document stipulates that while players \u201cmay promote a company that makes products containing CBD,\u201d they will \u201ccontinue to be prohibited from promoting marijuana companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words, don\u2019t expect to see Kevin Durant coming out with his own line of intoxicating cannabis products any time soon, or for players to otherwise be publicly endorsing marijuana brands.<\/p>\n<p>That said, other details that were previously reported do check out, according to the \u201cKey Deal Points\u201d memo that summarizes the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) that\u2019s still being fully drafted. The document was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cannabis\/article\/nba-refutes-reports-cannabis-clause-in-labor-deal-18074672.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> earlier on Wednesday by SFGATE.<\/p>\n<p>Under the CBA that is set to go into effect on July 1, players can invest in CBD companies without specific restrictions, and they \u201cmay also hold a passive, non-controlling interest in a company that makes products containing marijuana.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arguably the most meaningful change in the league\u2019s policy is the removal of marijuana drug testing requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarijuana will be removed from the Prohibited Substances List,\u201d the deal points paper says.<\/p>\n<p>However, it clarifies that a \u201cteam that has reason to believe one of its players is under the influence of marijuana while engaged in NBA or team-related activities, or has a dependency issue involving marijuana, may refer the player to a treatment program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is, players are free to consume cannabis legally off the court, but they remain barred from using marijuana at games or other team-related events like press conferences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NBA and teams may impose reasonable discipline on players who are under the influence while engaged in any team activity or in violation of the law,\u201d the document says.<\/p>\n<p>This reform will formally codify what has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/nba-wont-test-players-for-marijuana-for-third-season-in-a-row-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">league\u2019s decision to temporarily suspend cannabis testing<\/a> for the past three seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Marijuana icon and NBA commentator Snoop Dogg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/snoop-dogg-applauds-nba-for-new-marijuana-policy-saying-players-should-have-opioid-alternative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently weighed in on the policy change<\/a>, applauding the league for taking steps that would allow players to use cannabis for medical purposes, including as a potential opioid alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Michele Roberts, a onetime head of the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) who also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/nba-players-union-head-joins-marijuana-company-as-league-reportedly-suspends-drug-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">joined the board of the major cannabis company Cresco Labs<\/a>\u00a0in 2020, previously predicted that a formal change to codify the policy could come soon.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, it was announced that the online marijuana marketplace Weedmaps\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/nba-star-kevin-durant-teams-up-with-weedmaps-to-destigmatize-marijuana-in-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is teaming up with NBA star Kevin Durant<\/a>\u00a0for a multi-year partnership that\u2019s aimed at destigmatizing cannabis and showcasing the plant\u2019s potential value for \u201cathlete wellness and recovery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A growing number of professional leagues have taken steps to enact marijuana policy reforms as more states have moved to legalize cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada sports regulators recently voted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/nevada-sports-regulators-send-proposal-to-stop-penalizing-fighters-over-marijuana-to-the-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">send a proposed regulatory amendment to the governor<\/a> that would formally protect athletes from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/nevada-sports-regulators-move-to-formally-stop-penalizing-fighters-over-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being penalized over using or possessing marijuana<\/a>\u00a0in compliance with state law.<\/p>\n<p>The Chicago Cubs recently became the first Major League Baseball (MLB) team\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/chicago-cubs-become-first-mlb-team-to-officially-partner-with-cbd-company\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to officially partner with a CBD company<\/a>, which follows the national organization\u2019s league-wide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cannabis-company-and-major-league-baseball-sign-deal-for-charlottes-web-to-be-official-cbd-of-mlb-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">partnership with a popular CBD brand last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>MLB has stood out among other professional sports leagues as more willing to respond to the changing marijuana policy landscape.
