{"id":63818,"date":"2023-04-13T11:34:04","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T19:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2023\/04\/13\/cows-that-are-fed-hemp-cake-retain-safe-levels-of-thc-and-cbd-in-their-meat-usda-study-finds\/"},"modified":"2023-04-13T17:45:38","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T01:45:38","slug":"cows-that-are-fed-hemp-cake-retain-safe-levels-of-thc-and-cbd-in-their-meat-usda-study-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2023\/04\/13\/cows-that-are-fed-hemp-cake-retain-safe-levels-of-thc-and-cbd-in-their-meat-usda-study-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Cows That Are Fed Hemp Cake Retain Safe Levels Of THC And CBD In Their Meat, USDA Study Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/MM_Bill_Tracker_V5_blank-79.jpg\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1500\"> <\/p>\n<p>Cows that are fed hempseed cake retain very low concentrations of THC and CBD in their bodies, indicating that meat products from hemp-fed cattle are safe for human consumption, a new study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) found.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at USDA\u2019s Agriculture Research Service (ARS) and North Dakota State University (NDSU) said that the boom in hemp oil production has left farmers with a lot of byproduct that can be compressed into \u201ccakes,\u201d and they wanted to assess the safety of feeding it to livestock.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in the journal Food Additives and Contaminants, looked at cannabinoid concentration in the muscle, liver, kidney and fat tissues of cattle fed hempseed cake, checking the THC and CBD levels at different stages of metabolism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScientists found that the concentrations of [cannabinoids] in meat products contributed only a small fraction of the total amount global regulatory organizations consider safe for consumers,\u201d the department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/news-events\/news\/research-news\/2023\/scientists-evaluate-potential-human-cannabinol-exposure-from-consuming-meat-if-cattle-is-fed-hempseed-cake\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Scientists examine potential human cannabinol exposure from consuming meat if cattle is fed hempseed cake. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xqYS0VqE5U\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/xqYS0VqE5U<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FV4Ack4Zf6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/FV4Ack4Zf6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Agricultural Research Service (@USDA_ARS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USDA_ARS\/status\/1646174558976888838?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 12, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>What\u2019s more, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19440049.2023.2187645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> found that hempseed cake is \u201chighly nutritious\u201d and could serve as a \u201cviable alternative feed source for cattle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to our exposure assessment, it would be very difficult for a human to consume enough fat from cattle fed with hempseed cake to exceed regulatory guidelines for dietary THC exposure,\u201d David Smith of USDA\u2019s Animal Metabolism-Agricultural Chemicals Research Unit said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a food safety view point, hempseed cake having low cannabinoid content can be a suitable source of crude protein and fiber in cattle feed while offering industrial hemp producers a potential market for this byproduct of hempseed oil extraction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As an added bonus, another federally funded study published last year found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/feeding-cows-hemp-helps-them-chill-out-federally-funded-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feeding cows hemp reduces their stress<\/a>. Researchers have also looked into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/hemp-is-for-horses-new-study-examines-cbds-calming-and-painkilling-effects-in-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how CBD affects stress and pain in horses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the time being, however, hemp is not authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a food source for animals.<\/p>\n<p>FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/fda-warns-companies-about-cbd-products-for-food-producing-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent warning letters to a series of businesses<\/a> marketing CBD products for animals last year, cautioning that there\u2019s a \u201clack of data on what levels of potential residues are safe for a person consuming the foods that come from CBD-treated animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The agency has also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/fda-announces-it-will-not-issue-rules-to-allow-cbd-as-dietary-supplements-or-food-items-punting-to-congress-for-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frustrated industry stakeholders after declining to enact rules<\/a> more broadly allowing CBD products in the human food supply or as dietary supplements.
