{"id":62638,"date":"2023-03-11T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-11T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2023\/03\/11\/week-in-review-jay-z-sued-hawaii-says-aloha-to-recreational-pot-heavy-metal-debuts\/"},"modified":"2023-03-15T19:45:43","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T03:45:43","slug":"week-in-review-jay-z-sued-hawaii-says-aloha-to-recreational-pot-heavy-metal-debuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2023\/03\/11\/week-in-review-jay-z-sued-hawaii-says-aloha-to-recreational-pot-heavy-metal-debuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Week in Review: Jay-Z Sued; Hawaii Says \u201cAloha\u201d to Recreational Pot; Heavy Metal Debuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Week-In-Review-Hawaii-1.jpg\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\"> <\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h-jay-z-s-monogram-and-tpco-sued\"><strong>Jay-Z\u2019s Monogram and TPCO Sued<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Monogram, the cannabis company owned by billionaire rapper Shawn Carter aka Jay-Z, is facing serious allegations in a lawsuit filed in\u00a0Santa Clara County Superior Court on February 16, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cannabis\/article\/jay-z-cannabis-brand-monogram-lawsuit-allegations-17827450.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to <em>SFGate<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cathi Clay, a former vice president of The Parent Company (TPCO), a California-based cannabis company that operates the Monogram brand, claims to have \u201cexperienced years of harassment\u201d from the company\u2019s executives who allegedly acted \u201caggressive, demeaning and publicly questioned her abilities.\u201d Clay also alleges that Chief Financial Officer Mike Batesole made \u201cmany inappropriate comments about women, hiring \u2018housewives\u2019 to perform accounts payable, people of color and skill sets of employees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit also claims that executives shipped cannabis across state lines from California to New York \u201cfor a Monogram event with Shawn Carter\u201d\u2014an act prohibited by California\u2019s cannabis regulations and a federal felony. Additionally, Clay claims that TPCO made \u201cinaccurate\u201d payments with the US Securities and Exchange Commission in both 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to <em>SFGate<\/em>, a spokesperson from TPCO said, \u201cThe company does not comment on active litigation and plans to defend itself strongly against the false accusations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>SFGate<\/em> reports that according to a summons filed with the court, TPCO has 30 days to respond to the lawsuit and an initial court hearing \u201chas not yet been scheduled.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Hawaii Senate Advances Cannabis Legalization Bill<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cannabisnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Week-In-Review-Hawaii.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Week-In-Review-Hawaii.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64608\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">PHOTO shanemyersphoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Hawaii Senate voted in favor (22-3)\u00a0of SB 669, a cannabis legalization bill that would legalize adult-use cannabis, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>SB 669 would allow adults 21 and older to possess, share and transport up to 30 grams (or one ounce) of cannabis. The law also permits up to six cannabis plants, including a maximum of three mature, flowering plants, to be grown indoors. The legislation also lessens the penalties for unlicensed cannabis cultivation and sales and provides for the expungement of some marijuana-related crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, advocates have been working to pass legislation to sensibly legalize cannabis in Hawaii,\u201d said\u00a0DeVaughn Ward, senior legislative counsel at the Marijuana Policy Project and Hawaii resident, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpp.org\/news\/press\/hawaii-senate-advances-cannabis-legalization-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statement from the group<\/a>. \u201cNow that this bill has advanced out of the Senate, Hawaii is one step closer to becoming the next state to end cannabis prohibition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill was sponsored by Sen. Stanley Chang (D), Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole (D), Sen. Angus McKelvey (D) and Sen. Joy San Buenaventura (D) and now heads to the opposite chambers for consideration.
