Kathy Hochul (D) said the verification system will give consumers assurances that the companies they patronize are legitimate and the products are tested. It could also further help the state direct consumers away from unlicensed marijuana storefronts that have cropped up while regulators have worked to launch the regulated market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese tools will help to protect public health and strengthen our ability to deliver the equitable cannabis market our law envisions,\u201d Hochul said in a press release. \u201cWe will continue to work with our partners in municipalities across the state to enforce the law and shutdown illicit operators who are selling products that put New Yorkers at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Storefronts haven\u2019t opened yet for the first round of recreational marijuana businesses that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-york-officials-award-first-marijuana-dispensary-licenses-to-people-harmed-by-drug-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Cannabis Control Board (CCB) approved last month<\/a>. Take a look <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KRRIMGMrAz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/KRRIMGMrAz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NYS Office of Cannabis Management (@nys_cannabis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nys_cannabis\/status\/1603437741936558081?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">December 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>A \u201csimilar version\u201d will be provided for businesses that decide to take advantage of delivery services, which are being authorized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-york-officials-explain-rules-for-marijuana-delivery-services-that-will-serve-consumers-before-dispensaries-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">under guidance that was issued last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A New York City nonprofit group that received a retailer license says it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AshleyAtTimes\/status\/1602733707957264388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">planning<\/a> a soft launch on December 29 after receiving approval from a Manhattan community board and signing a lease for its storefront.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the governor announced that each regulated and tested marijuana product will feature a universal symbol, distinguishing them from illicit items that are sold in the unregulated market.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_68781\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68781\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-68781\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/OCM-Universal-Regs_SpotColors_Horizontal.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-68781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via OCM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs stores continue to open in the first quarter of 2023, the state will also be releasing a public education campaign called \u2018Why Buy Legal New York,\u2019 which will explain the benefits of purchasing legal adult-use cannabis for cannabis consumers in New York State,\u201d the governor\u2019s press release says. \u201cThe campaign will discuss the risks of buying untested illicit products, and how those products undermine the goals of New York\u2019s cannabis law to build the most equitable and inclusive cannabis market in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marijuana-companies-and-new-jersey-governor-team-up-to-urge-consumers-to-buy-legal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">similar to a \u201cBuy Legal\u201d campaign<\/a> that the U.S. Cannabis Council (USCC) launched last month in partnership with New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) and a series of major marijuana brands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dispensary verification tool unveiled by Governor Hochul today combined with requirements for the universal symbol on regulated products sets us off on the right foot,\u201d CCB Chair Tremaine Wright said. \u201cIt is critical that consumers know and trust that the new, legal cannabis market offers tested products and follows protocols designed to protect public health. These efforts combined with rigorous enforcement, will help build a stable, legal marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Alexander, executive director of the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-unveils-licensed-cannabis-dispensary-verification-tool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> that officials will \u201cuse every tool available to strengthen the equitable, legal adult-use cannabis market we\u2019re building and the dispensary verification tool Governor Hochul unveiled today is one step in that process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur enforcement team has been growing its partnerships and ramping up activity from Buffalo to New York City and will continue to do so until these illicit stores and trucks are shutdown,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>At a press briefing on Thursday, New York City\u2019s mayor stressed that the state will not become the \u201cWild Wild West of cannabis,\u201d and regulators will continue to crack down on unlicensed sellers.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We will not allow unlicensed stores to threaten the work we are doing to create an equitable cannabis industry in NYC.<\/p>\n<p>More than $4 million worth of illegal products, many targeting kids, were recently seized by our interagency task force, sending a clear warning to bad actors. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5fegnOfG9B\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/5fegnOfG9B<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCMayor\/status\/1603517760369070080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">December 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time the unlicensed stores stop selling illegal products and comply with the law,\u201d Adams said, touting the fact that the city has seized 100,000 illegal products with a value of about $4 million. \u201cThe cannabis industry is a budding economy.
