{"id":58022,"date":"2022-11-15T03:00:11","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T11:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/11\/15\/nearly-seven-in-ten-americans-back-marijuana-legalization-including-majority-of-republicans-latest-gallup-poll-finds\/"},"modified":"2022-11-15T17:46:35","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T01:46:35","slug":"nearly-seven-in-ten-americans-back-marijuana-legalization-including-majority-of-republicans-latest-gallup-poll-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/11\/15\/nearly-seven-in-ten-americans-back-marijuana-legalization-including-majority-of-republicans-latest-gallup-poll-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly Seven In Ten Americans Back Marijuana Legalization, Including Majority Of Republicans, Latest Gallup Poll Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-14-at-1.41.32-PM-1024x550-2.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"550\"> <\/p>\n<p>About seven in 10 Americans say that marijuana should be legalized\u2014including majorities of all political parties and age demographics\u2014according to the latest Gallup poll released on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A week after midterm elections that saw two more states legalize cannabis for adult use, Gallup\u2019s survey shows that public support has held strong, with 68 percent of Americans agreeing that \u201cthe use of marijuana should be legal,\u201d compared to 31 percent who said it should remain prohibited.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67346\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67346\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-67346\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-14-at-1.41.32-PM-1024x550-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"397\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-67346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Gallup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Support has stayed the same since the last two times the research organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/strong-majority-of-americans-continues-to-support-marijuana-legalization-at-record-high-level-new-gallup-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conducted a survey on the issue<\/a> last year and in 2020. Opposition dropped off by one percentage point from 2021, however, from 32 to 31 percent, with one percent now saying that they have \u201cno opinion\u201d on the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The poll\u2014which involved interviews with 1,009 Americans from October 3-20, with a +\/-4 percentage point margin of error\u2014also reflects the growing, bipartisan popularity of marijuana reform.<\/p>\n<p>There was majority support among people from all sides of the political spectrum, including 84 percent of Democrats, 73 percent of independents and 51 percent of Republicans.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">68% of U.S. adults think the use of marijuana should be legal, unchanged from 2020 and 2021 and tied for the highest in Gallup\u2019s polling history. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/h7k2JeCvyX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/h7k2JeCvyX<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 GallupNews (@GallupNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GallupNews\/status\/1592533865821765636?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">November 15, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>While younger people were much more likely to back legalization, the issue enjoys majority support across all age demographics: 18-29 (77 percent), 30-49 (73 percent), 50-64 (67 percent) and 65+ (58 percent).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarijuana is overwhelmingly popular amongst voters under 45 and the older prohibitionists are dying daily,\u201d Justin Strekal, founder of the BOWL PAC, told Marijuana Moment. \u201cIt is becoming clearer every year that Republican politicians will be forced to reverse their prohibitionist ways or face even more defeats at the ballot box in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Disclosure: Strekal support Marijuana Moment\u2019s work through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/marijuanamoment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">monthly pledge on Patreon<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Gallup has been surveying Americans about legalization since 1969, when just 12 percent of respondents said that they oppose prohibition. Support has gradually increased since then, and it\u2019s risen demonstrably in the years since states started individually legalizing marijuana.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, a person\u2019s level of educational attainment and the geographic region where they live are two factors that \u201cdo not have meaningful relationships with marijuana attitudes,\u201d the firm said in its latest analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAmericans have grown much more supportive of legalizing marijuana over the past two decades, but support appears to be leveling off for now, not showing any change in the past three years,\u201d Gallup\u2019s Jeffrey Jones wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWhile majorities of most major subgroups are in favor of legalizing marijuana, there are a few holdouts\u2014namely, political conservatives and regular churchgoers,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the firm indicate that demographic trends indicate that the share of the population that backs legalization will increase in the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cSmall segments of the population (in particular, older conservatives) are still disinclined to think marijuana use should be legal. However, younger conservatives and younger moderates are more inclined than their older counterparts to think cannabis should be legal. As such, in future decades support for legalizing marijuana can be expected to continue to grow as newer, likely more pro-marijuana, generations replace older generations in the U.S. population.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to provide more robust data, particularly when it comes to where various demographic subgroups stand on the issue, Gallup did something differently this round by analyzing aggregated findings from five years of polling, from 2018-2022.<\/p>\n<p>That dataset showed average support for legalization at 67 percent for the general population, but opinions \u201cvaried significantly by subgroup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cConservative, religious and older Americans are the least supportive, while liberal, nonreligious and younger Americans are the most supportive,\u201d it showed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67347\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67347\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-67347\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-14-at-1.42.37-PM-825x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"570\" height=\"708\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-67347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Gallup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cSpecifically, subgroups whose support for legalization exceeds the national average by 10 or more percentage points include those with no religious preference (89 percent), self-identified liberals (84 percent), Democrats (81 percent), young adults (79 percent) and those who seldom or never attend religious services (78 percent),\u201d the analysis says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGroups whose support is at least 10 points below the national average include those who attend church weekly (46 percent), conservatives (49 percent), Republicans (51 percent), older adults (53 percent) and Hispanic adults (56 percent),\u201d it continues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cA statistical analysis that takes into account the influence of multiple respondent characteristics simultaneously confirms that ideology, religiosity, age and party identification are the most important predictors of marijuana attitudes. The model indicates that ideology is slightly more influential than the other variables.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_67348\" style=\"width: 966px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67348\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-67348\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Screen-Shot-2022-11-14-at-1.43.16-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"956\" height=\"326\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-67348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Gallup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The aggregated data collectively involved a sample of interviews from 5,412 Americans, with margin of error of just +\/-1 percentage point.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/405086\/marijuana-views-linked-ideology-religiosity-age.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">findings<\/a> and demographic trends from this latest survey are generally consistent with past polling on the issue, including one that was commissioned by Fox News and the Associated Press and conducted in the lead-up to the election that found 63 percent support for legalization nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, that survey also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/most-voters-in-two-states-that-defeated-marijuana-ballot-measures-actually-support-legalization-in-general-election-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found majority support for ending prohibition<\/a> among voters in two states that rejected legalization initiatives last week, signaling that the measures might have failed in part because of disagreements about specific provisions rather than the basic concept of legalization.<\/p>\n<p>A poll released last month also shows that a majority of Americans are in favor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/biden-announces-mass-marijuana-pardons-and-calls-for-cannabis-scheduling-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Joe Biden\u2019s decision to grant pardons<\/a> to people who\u2019ve committed federal marijuana possession offenses, and most also want to see their own governors follow suit with state-level cannabis relief.<\/p>\n<p>Most Americans don\u2019t think marijuana is dangerous despite efforts by legalization opponents to cast the plant in a negative light, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/most-americans-dont-think-marijuana-is-dangerous-despite-prohibitionist-arguments-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">another recent survey showed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to Gallup, the firm separately released data in August that found more than twice as many Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/more-americans-now-smoke-marijuana-than-cigarettes-for-the-first-time-ever-gallup-reports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">think that cannabis has a positive impact<\/a> on its consumers and society at large than say the same about alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s generally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/more-americans-say-it-would-be-better-if-people-used-marijuana-instead-of-alcohol-poll-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consistent with the results of a separate poll<\/a> released in March that found more Americans think it\u2019d be good if people switched to cannabis and drank less alcohol compared to those who think the substance substitution would be bad.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marijuana-use-is-more-moral-than-porn-gay-relations-and-wearing-animal-fur-americans-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2020 Gallup survey separately showed<\/a>\u00a0that 86 percent of Americans view alcohol use as morally acceptable, compared to 70 percent who said the same about marijuana consumption.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"dVYl2TufTP\">\n<p><a
