On Wednesday, lawmakers\u00a0 from the party said the issue will be among those that the caucus intends to discuss imminently as they decide on legislative priorities for 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Cannabis legalization has passed the House under Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party leadership, though the reform has been consistently blocked in the Senate, which in recent years has been controlled by Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>But the political winds have shifted demonstrably in advocates\u2019 favor, with Democrats taking control of the Senate by one seat for the first time since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>At a press briefing on Wednesday, Senate Democrats were asked whether they intended to use their majorities to advance legalization.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Erin Murphy (D), who led campaign efforts for the party this cycle and could be elected as the new majority leader, said that members \u201care going to get together for the first time tomorrow to begin to talk about the agenda, but it is important to remember that legalization of cannabis is a popular issue across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Murphy respond to the legalization question, starting around 29:30 into the video below:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MPRnews\/videos\/651942299942943\" \/>\n<p>Another senator included marijuana reform in a list of policy issues that align with the party\u2019s policy priorities and which have passed the House only to stall in the GOP Senate. (That part of the discussion starts around 32:00 in the video above.)<\/p>\n<p>The House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/minnesota-house-approves-marijuana-legalization-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed a legalization bill from House Majority Leader Ryan Winkler (D)<\/a>\u00a0last year, after it moved through 12 committees on its intensive legislative journey to the floor. It then stalled out in the GOP-controlled Senate. An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/minnesota-lawmakers-introduce-bipartisan-marijuana-legalization-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier bipartisan legalization proposal<\/a> led by Sens. Scott Jensen (R) and Melisa L\u00f3pez Franzen (D) in 2019 also did not advance.<\/p>\n<p>Frazen also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/minnesota-republican-senators-block-marijuana-legalization-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tried to leverage a legislative procedure<\/a> earlier this year to bypass the committee process and quickly bring legalization to the floor, but the motion did not receive the required supermajority support to work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are excited about the prospects for full legalization, but Minnesotans who want to see legalization will still have work to do,\u201d Maren Schroeder, coalition director for the MNisReady Coalition, told Marijuana Moment on Wednesday. \u201cWe\u2019re optimistic that we\u2019ll get it across the finish line in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coalition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/minnesota-marijuana-activists-launch-voter-education-effort-to-elect-pro-legalization-senate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched a voter education resource<\/a> in August in the hopes of activating more voters to make their voices heard and support candidates who back cannabis legalization\u2014an effort that seems to have paid off.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The DFL Party flipped the Minnesota Senate and held both the Minnesota House and Governor&#8217;s office!<\/p>\n<p>We won a trifecta! Now, we deliver for Minnesotans! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yk8KDyMH8O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/Yk8KDyMH8O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Minnesota DFL Party (@MinnesotaDFL) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MinnesotaDFL\/status\/1590256795901374465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">November 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Two polls released in September found that the majority of Minnesota residents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/two-new-minnesota-polls-show-support-for-legalizing-marijuana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support adult-use marijuana legalization<\/a>\u2014and one survey showed that even more Minnesotans approve of the state\u2019s move to legalize THC-infused edibles that was enacted earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith yesterday\u2019s elections, Minnesota has moved from a long shot for legalizing in the next couple of years to one of the best prospects,\u201d Karen O\u2019Keefe, director of state policies at the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), told Marijuana Moment. \u201cOnly the Republican majority in the Senate stood in the way. The House already passed a bill in 2021, and Gov. Walz is a vocal supporter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gov. That legislature-run poll found that 61 percent of Minnesotans back legalizing cannabis for adult use.<\/p>\n<p>Support was up this year from 58 percent when the House Public Information Services\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/minnesota-lawmakers-poll-shows-growing-support-for-marijuana-legalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polled fair goers on the issue last year<\/a>.
