While it doesn\u2019t immediately enact changes to criminal justice policy in San Francisco, it urges police to deprioritize psychedelics as \u201camongst the lowest priority\u201d for enforcement and requests that \u201cCity resources not be used for any investigation, detention, arrest, or prosecution arising out of alleged violations of state and federal law regarding the use of Entheogenic Plants listed on the Federally Controlled Substances Schedule 1 list.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decriminalize Nature San Francisco helped advance the resolution, which also <span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif\">implores city officials to \u201cinstruct\u201d its state and federal lobbyists to push for psychedelics decriminalization in California and federally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The whereas section of the measure talks about emerging research that shows entheogenic substances have therapeutic potential to treat a wide range of mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance misuse disorder.<\/p>\n<p>It further notes that the \u201cstate legislature has already started the conversation around the decriminalization of personal possession of small amounts of seven psychedelic substances,\u201d in the form of a bill from Sen. Scott Wiener (D) that passed the Senate and several Assembly committees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-senator-gives-up-psychedelics-reform-push-for-2022-after-bill-gutted-by-key-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before being significantly scaled back in a final panel<\/a> and ultimately pulled by the sponsor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/decriminalizenature\/posts\/pfbid0mZFTJZfAAaR9W7Wov2nt73Ah7MfJyDR4KGBA4Xv6AVUhv9iy2bgfTSFaRAmfwtkLl\" data-width=\"552\" \/>\n<p>\u201cI am proud to work with Decrim Nature to put San Francisco on record in support of the decriminalization of psychedelics and entheogens,\u201d Preston said in a press release.\u00a0\u201cSan Francisco joins a growing list of cities and countries that are taking a fresh look at these plant-based medicines, following science and data, and destigmatizing their use and cultivation. Today\u2019s unanimous vote is an exciting step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgov.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=5742708&amp;GUID=94A234BE-CD31-4676-AF87-E32FB3C52027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a> says that a copy of the measure must be transmitted to local police, the district attorney\u2019s office, state lawmakers including Wiener, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D).<\/p>\n<p>San Francisco officials have been bullish on drug policy reform, including promoting harm reduction services. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-governor-vetoes-bill-on-safe-drug-consumption-sites-despite-longtime-support-for-harm-reduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newsom controversially vetoed a bill<\/a> to create a safe drug consumption pilot program in the state last month, the mayor and city attorney signaled that San Francisco would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/san-francisco-officials-ready-to-authorize-safe-drug-consumption-sites-despite-governors-veto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">push ahead with its plans to authorize the sites<\/a> regardless.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, numerous cities across the U.S. have enacted psychedelics decriminalization, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/psychedelics-decrim-activists-mark-first-anniversary-of-denvers-historic-psilocybin-mushroom-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starting in Denver in 2019<\/a> and also expanding to California cities like Oakland and Santa Cruz. Tony Lovasco (R)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/gop-missouri-lawmaker-files-psychedelics-therapy-and-decriminalization-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced a psychedelics reform bill<\/a>\u00a0for the 2022 session.
