What\u2019s more, these frequent marijuana consumers actually experience more pleasure than those who abstain.<\/p>\n<p>The research, published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, looked at data on 274 adults and adolescents who reported using cannabis 1-7 times per week over the course of three months.<\/p>\n<p>While there\u2019s long been a stigma attached to cannabis users, with legalization opponents routinely suggesting that marijuana contributes to laziness and overall apathy, the researchers at the University of Cambridge and University College London said their findings \u201care not consistent with the hypothesis that non-acute cannabis use is associated with amotivation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results suggest that cannabis use at a frequency of three to four days per week is not associated with apathy, effort-based decision-making for reward, reward wanting, or reward liking in adults or adolescents,\u201d the study says. \u201cCannabis users had lower anhedonia than controls, albeit at a small effect size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Study participants took four assessments to measure anhedonia (the inability to experience pleasure), apathy and reward-based motivation and general reward responses. Their results were compared to a control group of non-users.<\/p>\n<p>What the researchers found was that marijuana consumers were slightly more capable of experiencing pleasure, regardless of the frequency of use, and there was not a statistically significant difference between the groups when it came to apathy.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">139 participants also completed tasks to assess willingness to expend effort for reward (\u2018PhEft\u2019 task) and subjective reward wanting and liking (\u2018RRPt\u2019 task). There was *no* difference between cannabis users and controls on either task. 5\/11 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Fu5adL7ThE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/Fu5adL7ThE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Martine Skumlien (@SkumlienMartine) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkumlienMartine\/status\/1565645701496840192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">September 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>\u201cWe were surprised to see that there was really very little difference between cannabis users and non-users when it came to lack of motivation or lack of enjoyment, even among those who used cannabis every day,\u201d Martine Skumlien of the University of Cambridge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cam.ac.uk\/research\/news\/cannabis-users-no-less-likely-to-be-motivated-or-able-to-enjoy-lifes-pleasure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release. \u201cThis is contrary to the stereotypical portrayal we see on TV and in movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cA common stereotype of cannabis users is the \u2018stoner\u2019\u2014think Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, The Dude in The Big Lebowski, or, more recently, Argyle in Stranger Things.
