{"id":56479,"date":"2022-08-10T10:19:15","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T18:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/08\/10\/sxsw-opens-voting-on-nearly-100-marijuana-and-psychedelics-panels-for-2023-festival\/"},"modified":"2022-08-10T19:45:30","modified_gmt":"2022-08-11T03:45:30","slug":"sxsw-opens-voting-on-nearly-100-marijuana-and-psychedelics-panels-for-2023-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/08\/10\/sxsw-opens-voting-on-nearly-100-marijuana-and-psychedelics-panels-for-2023-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"SXSW Opens Voting On Nearly 100 Marijuana And Psychedelics Panels For 2023 Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Voting is now open for the public to decide which panels will make the stage at next year\u2019s South By Southwest (SXSW) festival\u2014and there are about 100 marijuana- and psychedelics-related proposals to pick from.<\/p>\n<p>Drug policy topics have become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/sxsw-selects-multiple-marijuana-and-psychedelics-panels-for-2022-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consistent feature of the Austin-based event<\/a> in recent years as more states have legalized cannabis and moved to reform laws around psychedelics like psilocybin locally and at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>There are specific SXSW cannabis and psychedelics \u201ctracks\u201d to sort through, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/sxsw-wants-you-to-vote-on-dozens-of-marijuana-and-psychedelics-panels-for-2022-event\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unlike last year when the topics were interspersed<\/a> on the panel picker. Under the cannabis category, there are 61 options. For psychedelics, there are 32 proposed panels. There are also several other panels not categorized under those tracks that pop up when searching for related keywords, as well as some for the related but separate SXSW EDU event.<\/p>\n<p>The SXSW <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PanelPicker<\/a> voting period to help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sxsw.com\/news\/2022\/sxsw-panelpicker-community-voting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determine<\/a> which panels will appear at the March 2023 festival started on Tuesday and ends on August 21.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are some examples of the marijuana panels that voters are able to select from:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Which Political Party Will Legalize Weed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Nancy Mace (R-SC), key congressional allies in the federal legalization movement, would speak at the <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/128850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> about their mutual interest in ending prohibition while taking differing approaches to the issue. Andrew DeAngelo, president of DeAngelo Brothers Productions, would moderate the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green or not? Is cannabis actually<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/130536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> would focus on the unique environmental impacts of the often energy-intensive cannabis industry and the role regulations could play in promoting sustainability. Politico\u2019s Natalie Fertig would moderate the discussion, with panelists including a D.C. environmental regulator and Resource Innovation Institute Executive Director Derek Smith.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mainstreaming Cannabinoids \u2013 Path To Legalization<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Council for Federal Cannabis Regulation Executive Director Sarah Chase would speak about \u201cthe nature of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMPs),\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/122173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> description says. A main focus would be the need for industry standardization and the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black Women in Cannabis \u2013 More Diversity is Needed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kema Ogden, the first Black woman to own a cannabis dispensary in Nevada, would moderate a conversation with three other leading Black female figures in the marijuana industry. The <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/125618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> would center on the evolution of cannabis policy in the U.S., as well as efforts to promote social equity in the market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Athletes, Music and Cannabis; Bringing Weed Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The proposed panel would feature former NFL player Ricky Williams and other industry figures who would speak to how celebrities and athletes have influenced mainstream understanding and acceptance of cannabis culture. The <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/130814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discussion<\/a> would be moderated by Forbes\u2019s Lindsey Bartlett.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here are some psychedelics panel options:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Obtaining DEA License to Grow Psilocybin Mushrooms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scottsdale Research Institute Principal Investigator Sue Sisley and Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Executive Director Rick Doblin would participate in a <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/121472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conversation<\/a> about the challenges associated with obtaining federal approval to access psychedelic substances like psilocybin for study purposes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IP &amp; The Rights of Plant Medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/127237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> would explore topics such as the ethical implications of psychedelic-based drug development and patenting, as well as the debate over producing and marketing natural versus synthetic psychedelics. MAPS Public Benefit Corporation CEO Amy Emerson and STAT News investigative journalist Olivia Goodhill would be among the panelists.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psychedelics in the Healthcare System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For this <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/128592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a>, panelists such as MAPS researcher Dorna Pourang and attorney Matt Zorn would talk about \u201cthe state of psychedelic therapy, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and how the medical system will make room for psychedelics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building an Equitable Psychedelic Medicines System<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As research on the therapeutic potential of certain psychedelics expands, there are looming questions about where the pharmaceutical industry might fit in\u2014and the possible corporatization and consolidation that could come with that. VICE\u2019s Shayla Love and Psychedelic Alpha\u2019s Josh Hardman would be among those participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/129334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a> to discuss the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Psychedelic Potential: Technology and Consciousness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MAP\u2019s Doblin, longtime cannabis industry figure DeAngelo and TRIPP CEO Nanea Reeves would have a conversation about the intersection of \u201cvirtual reality technology, psychedelic treatments, and psychedelic ceremonies\u201d for this <a href=\"https:\/\/panelpicker.sxsw.com\/vote\/130641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">panel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These are just a few of the nearly 100 drug policy panels up for consideration for SXSW 2023.
