Ned Lamont (D) said that he received a briefing on regulators\u2019 progress on cannabis licensing \u201cthis week.\u201d Connecticut is \u201cabout six months away from opening a safe, equitable market,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just got my latest briefing on adult-use cannabis this week. We\u2019re about six months away from opening a safe, equitable market. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MGxEazXhbp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/MGxEazXhbp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Ned Lamont (@GovNedLamont) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovNedLamont\/status\/1546867632971943937?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">July 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Part of the process has involved a Social Equity Council, which <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/socialequitycouncil\/Social-Equity-Council-Information\/Articles\/July-12-2022-Agenda---Council-Meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">met<\/a> on Tuesday and accepted 16 marijuana cultivators as social equity applicants. This represents one of the first steps toward formally approving recreational cannabis licensees in the state, though they must still be cleared by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and submit background checks before paying a fee to apply for a provisional license.<\/p>\n<p>Lamont, for his part, has long supported legalization and has been celebrating the policy change that\u2019s being implemented. For example, he shared a clip of a country song in June that including lyrics saying that one great thing about Connecticut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/connecticut-governor-jams-to-country-song-celebrating-marijuana-legalization-drawing-criticism-from-gop-opponent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is that it\u2019s \u201ccool to smoke some pot\u201d<\/a> since the governor signed an adult-use legalization bill into law last year.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican gubernatorial candidate, Bob Stefanowski, was quick to criticize the marijuana mention, saying that \u201cour governor should not be encouraging kids to smoke marijuana\u201d and later calling for an attorney general investigation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These are the first &#8220;social equity&#8221; applicants picked<\/p>\n<p>Unlike retail store applications, they did *not* have to go through a lottery process<\/p>\n<p>There were 41 total applicants, but consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CohnReznick?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@CohnReznick<\/a> determined 25 didn&#8217;t qualify<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Craven \/>\n<p>Before signing legalization into law, Lamont was asked if he\u2019d partake himself when it was legal\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/connecticut-governor-says-hes-open-to-smoking-marijuana-after-he-signs-legalization-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and he didn\u2019t rule it out<\/a>, saying \u201cnot right now, but we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lamont also signed a large-scale budget bill in May that includes provisions to set the state up to provide certain patients with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/connecticut-governor-signs-bill-creating-psychedelic-treatment-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">access to psychedelic-assisted treatment<\/a>\u00a0using substances like MDMA and psilocybin.<\/p>\n<p>In neighboring New York, regulators are also working to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-york-marijuana-regulators-put-52-unlicensed-retailers-on-blast-as-state-prepares-to-launch-adult-use-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open
