{"id":55609,"date":"2022-07-01T08:12:34","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T16:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/07\/01\/vermont-voters-overwhelmingly-support-drug-decriminalization-across-party-lines-new-poll-finds\/"},"modified":"2022-07-01T08:45:40","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T16:45:40","slug":"vermont-voters-overwhelmingly-support-drug-decriminalization-across-party-lines-new-poll-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/07\/01\/vermont-voters-overwhelmingly-support-drug-decriminalization-across-party-lines-new-poll-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"Vermont Voters Overwhelmingly Support Drug Decriminalization, Across Party Lines, New Poll Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.38.28PM-1024x817-2.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"817\"> <\/p>\n<p>Vermont voters overwhelmingly support decriminalizing currently illicit drugs and treating substance misuse as a public health issue, according to a new poll.<\/p>\n<p>The survey released by Data for Progress and the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) on Thursday found widespread, bipartisan support for the basic principle of decriminalization, as well as specific legislation to achieve that reform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/vermont-lawmakers-file-drug-decriminalization-bill-with-hopes-of-promoting-harm-reduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that was introduced this year but did not advance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>More than four out of five Vermont voters (84 percent) said that they\u2019re in favor of removing criminal penalties for simple drug possession, imposing a civil fine in lieu of incarceration and allocating resources for treatment and harm reduction, as proposed by legislators.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61589\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61589\" class=\" wp-image-61589\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.38.28PM-1024x817-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"591\" height=\"471\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Data for Progress\/DPA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That support includes majorities of Democrats (91 percent), Republicans (68 percent) and independents (87 percent), the poll found.<\/p>\n<p>As a general matter, 81 percent of voters overall said that they favor treating drug use as a health issue, compared to just 17 percent who said they think people who use illicit substances should face criminal penalties like incarceration.<\/p>\n<p>Again, support for a public health approach to addiction extended across partisan lines, with 91 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of Republicans and 84 percent of independents agreeing with the statement that \u201cwe should treat drug use as a health issue, focusing on deducing the harms of addiction and offering voluntary treatment, health, and recovery services.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61590\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61590\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-61590\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.37.14PM-1024x734-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"421\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Data for Progress\/DPA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWith Vermont having one of the highest increases in overdoses in the country last year, it\u2019s clear that the existing approach of criminalizing people who use drugs isn\u2019t working to keep people safe. In fact, it has only made things worse,\u201d Grey Gardner, senior staff attorney at DPA, <a href=\"https:\/\/drugpolicy.org\/press-release\/2022\/06\/new-poll-finds-more-four-out-five-vermont-voters-support-decriminalizing-drug\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release. \u201cThis survey makes it abundantly clear that Vermont voters want a different approach\u2014one focused on health rather than arrest and punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the survey showed that half of respondents have either personally experienced addiction or an overdose, or they know someone close to them who has. Those direct connections may be a contributing factor in the strong support for harm reduction reform policies.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61591\" style=\"width: 550px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61591\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-61591\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.36.12PM-1024x642-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Data for Progress\/DPA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Most voters (65 percent) also said that they\u2019d be more likely to support a political candidate for state or federal office is they embrace drug decriminalization. It\u2019s a finding that Gov. Phil Scott (R) might want to take into account, as he recently vetoed a bill that would have charged a state panel with standardizing personal use amounts of various illegal drugs, which advocates saw as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/vermont-governor-vetoes-bill-on-reducing-the-criminalization-of-drugs-by-setting-personal-use-amounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a first step toward broader reform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61592\" style=\"width: 566px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61592\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-61592\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.38.58PM-1024x787-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"556\" height=\"428\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61592\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Data for Progress\/DPA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/vermont-would-decriminalize-drugs-under-new-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decriminalization bill was also filed last year<\/a>, but like this session\u2019s version, it also didn\u2019t receive a vote.<\/p>\n<p>Beside decriminalization, majorities of respondents also said that they back creating non-police crisis-response teams for drug-related incidents (68 percent), expungement criminal records for drug possession (60 percent) and establishing overdose prevention sites (59 percent).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_61593\" style=\"width: 598px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-61593\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-61593\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/ScreenShot2022-06-28at4.40.25PM-1024x675-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"588\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-61593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via Data for Progress\/DPA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>With respect to that latter policy, Scott also recently vetoed a bill that would have created a working group tasked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/vermont-governor-vetoes-bill-on-safe-drug-consumption-sites-and-harm-reduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crafting a plan to open safe consumption sites<\/a> where people could use currently illicit drugs in a medically supervised environment.<\/p>\n<p>The survey involved interviews with 547 likely voters from May 26-June 8, with a margin of error of +\/- four percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur poll shows that Vermont voters strongly support changing how the state approaches drug use. Voters are not only personally impacted by addiction and overdoses, but support more humane approaches to drug use, such as directing individuals toward recovery and treatment, rather than continuing cycles of arrests, incarceration, stigmatization, and marginalization,\u201d Data for Progress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2022\/6\/30\/vermont-voters-support-treating-drug-addiction-as-a-health-issue-and-decriminalizing-simple-possession\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a> in its report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters are also receptive to voting for candidates who would prioritize this type of approach to drug use,\u201d it said. \u201cVermont lawmakers should continue to advocate for decriminalization policies and measures, which have the backing of their voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, another Vermont bill to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/vermont-lawmakers-prepare-psychedelics-and-broader-drug-decriminalization-bills-for-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">remove criminal penalties around plant- and fungi-based substances<\/a>\u00a0such as psilocybin, mescaline, ibogaine and DMT was also introduced last year by Rep.
