Ned Lamont (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/connecticut-governor-jams-to-country-song-celebrating-marijuana-legalization-drawing-criticism-from-gop-opponent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharing a clip of a song that talks about the state\u2019s marijuana legalization law<\/a>\u2014and he\u2019s asking the state attorney general to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>Lamont posted a short clip of a new country song from Rusty Gear on Sunday. At one point, the singer says that one great thing about Connecticut is that it\u2019s \u201ccool to smoke some pot\u201d since the governor signed an adult-use legalization bill into law last year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Connecticut has everything! <\/p>\n<p>The nation&#8217;s best pizza<br \/>Lobster rolls<br \/>College basketball<br \/>Beaches<br \/>Mountains<br \/>Rivers<br \/>Great breweries<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CTgrown?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">#CTgrown<\/a> produce<br \/>Country music<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you read that right. We have country music, like this toe-tapping track about our great state. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5UKiYxVsKd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/5UKiYxVsKd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Ned Lamont (@GovNedLamont) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovNedLamont\/status\/1533432987781578753?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Lamont\u2019s GOP opponent Bob Stefanowski was quick to criticize the marijuana mention, saying over the weekend that \u201cour governor should not be encouraging kids to smoke marijuana.\u201d But now he\u2019s taken that critique up a notch by writing a letter asking state Attorney General William Tong (D) to investigate whether the sitting governor violated a state statute concerning cannabis advertising.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI write to request that your office investigate statements made in a recent video released last week by Governor Ned Lamont\u2019s administration promoting the accessibility of marijuana in Connecticut,\u201d the letter says. \u201cThe Office of the Governor on June 5, 2022, using state taxpayer resources, asserts the following as part of a promotional series about Connecticut.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Last fall, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamTong?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@williamtong<\/a> went after marijuana billboard advertisements visible to CT kids<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovNedLamont?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@govnedlamont<\/a> released a video promoting the use of marijuana<\/p>\n<p>AG Tong, you know the importance of this issue; hold our Governor to the same standard as everyone else <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OagaEe13ES\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/OagaEe13ES<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bob Stefanowski (@bobforgovernor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobforgovernor\/status\/1534206696385658885?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June 7, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>It then references the Connecticut jingle, titled \u201cFirst Ever Connecticut Country Song.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unclear to date how much money has been spent to create and or distribute this advertisement, but the Governor\u2019s office and any state agencies responsible for its creation and distribution should immediately disclose that information so proper action can be taken,\u201d Stefanowski\u2019s letter days.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, the song doesn\u2019t advertise any marijuana products; it simply makes reference to a policy change that was enacted under Lamont. Stefanowski\u2019s initial complaint that the song clip specifically encourages youth use is also incorrect.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This video can\u2019t be real \u2013 Can it <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovNedLamont?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@GovNedLamont<\/a>?  Our governor should not be encouraging kids to smoke marijuana because Ned Lamont believes it\u2019s \u201ccool to smoke pot.\u201d  If this doesn\u2019t prove we need a change in leadership I\u2019m not sure what does! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JDlK2Ucu1H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/JDlK2Ucu1H<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bob Stefanowski (@bobforgovernor) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bobforgovernor\/status\/1533509997996425216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June 5, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>The letter cites state statute that says nobody should engage in cannabis-related advertising on social media \u201cunless advertiser has reliable evidence that at least 90 percent of the audience for the advertisement is reasonably expected to be twenty-one years of age or older and a violation of the statute is an unfair or deceptive practice\u201d under the law.<\/p>\n<p>Again, there was no advertising of a commercial marijuana product or business in the song clip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are the lyrics of the clip the governor shared:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cBack home we thank the governor for the blessings that we got.<br \/>\nWe can gamble on the internet, and it\u2019s cool to smoke some pot.<br \/>\nSo y\u2019all come visit my state and mind your etiquette.<br \/>\nI guarantee you\u2019ll be welcome in Connecticut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>In any case, Stefanowski evidently wants to make cannabis reform a campaign attack item, and his letter talks about how a state department previously cracked down on marijuana-related billboards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs families across Connecticut continue their uphill battle to warn their children about the risks of substance abuse in the face of a statewide drug crisis, it is unfortunate that the Governor used his platform to undermine their efforts, without regard for the under-age audience he influences,\u201d the candidate wrote. \u201cThese are serious concerns and warrant serious attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government of our state must be held to the highest standards. As the people\u2019s lawyer, I hope you agree and initiate an investigation immediately,\u201d the letter concludes.<\/p>\n<p>Lamont, who has been championing cannabis reform throughout his tenure as governor,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/connecticut-governor-signs-marijuana-legalization-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed legalization into law<\/a>\u00a0about this time last year.
