{"id":52860,"date":"2022-02-10T04:44:30","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T12:44:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/02\/10\/congressional-lawmakers-condemn-federal-utility-companys-medical-marijuana-electricity-threat\/"},"modified":"2022-02-10T13:46:17","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T21:46:17","slug":"congressional-lawmakers-condemn-federal-utility-companys-medical-marijuana-electricity-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2022\/02\/10\/congressional-lawmakers-condemn-federal-utility-companys-medical-marijuana-electricity-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Congressional Lawmakers Condemn Federal Utility Company\u2019s Medical Marijuana Electricity Threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Congressional lawmakers are condemning a federally owned utility company after it suggested that it might <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/federal-power-utility-threatens-to-shut-off-the-lights-on-marijuana-businesses-after-mississippi-legalizes-medical-cannabis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut off electricity to marijuana-related businesses<\/a>, even in states that have legalized cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Steve Cohen (D-TN) sent a letter to the head of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) on Wednesday after it was reported that the utility released a statement suggesting federal obligations mean it can\u2019t serve cannabis businesses, just as Mississippi\u2019s governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/mississippi-governor-signs-medical-marijuana-legalization-bill-into-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a bill into law legalizing medical marijuana<\/a> in the state.\u00a0TVA is a main supplier of electricity to the Mississippi\u2019s northern region.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers wrote to TVA Chairman Chairman William Kilbride that they feel \u201cdeep concern\u201d over the utility\u2019s statement, which details \u201cplans to have the agency deputize its employees to attempt to enforce outdated and scientifically baseless federal cannabis policies against state-legal cannabis businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge a swift rescission of the TVA\u2019s February 2 statement and a commitment by the agency to abide by congressional intent in refraining from impeding states in the implementation of medical cannabis programs,\u201d the letter says.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the situation earlier this week, Cohen separately told Marijuana Moment that TVA \u201cshould not discriminate against legal businesses that need utilities,\u201d and the company \u201cneeds all the business they could get as their rates are way too high already and many want to leave TVA.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After Mississippi joined 36 other states in legalizing cannabis for medical use, TVA is reportedly threatening to turn in Mississippi&#8217;s legal cannabis businesses to federal agents. These policies are outdated, unpopular and scientifically baseless and that&#8217;s what I told <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TVAnews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@TVAnews<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wpWSn5ATF2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/wpWSn5ATF2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Steve Cohen (@RepCohen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepCohen\/status\/1491774202705104898?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">February 10, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Following Mississippi\u2019s move to legalize medical cannabis, TVA said in a public statement that while it is under contract to provide wholesale services to local power companies, which are regulated at the state level, federal law means that its \u201cresources and funds may not be purposely used to facilitate activity that potentially violates federal law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven this important point, TVA will not direct any federal resources or funds to the cultivation and\/or distribution of marijuana,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>The utility said its employees will report to management if they find that a local power company is using TVA services to provide electricity to state-legal cannabis businesses, and management \u201cwill make a determination regarding our reporting obligations to agencies that may have proper jurisdiction to enforce the federal Controlled Substances Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the new <a href=\"https:\/\/cohen.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/congressmen-cohen-and-blumenauer-urge-tva-reverse-course-marijuana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>, Blumenauer and Cohen said that the utility\u2019s plans as cannabis reform is enacted within its operating jurisdiction \u201cdisregard the democratic will of the people of Mississippi.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny suggestion of requiring TVA employees to report end-use customers suspected of engaging in activity involving marijuana is an affront to the people who voted in support of a medical cannabis program, to say nothing of the state legislature and governor, who overwhelmingly enacted a medical cannabis program,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cThe Department of Justice is restricted from using congressionally appropriated funding to assist with these misguided efforts.
