Lewis Social Justice fellows through CBCF. Participants in the program, which is named after the late congressman and civil rights champion, will \u201cfocus on research related to cannabis policy and social justice reforms and propose solutions to Congress,\u201d according to a press release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to partner with the Hawthorne Social Justice Fund in support of the John R. Lewis Social Justice Fellows: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eTOEucOmqx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/eTOEucOmqx<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1CF0EnAeXs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/1CF0EnAeXs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Scotts Miracle-Gro (@Scotts_MGro) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Scotts_MGro\/status\/1488905262664765446?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">February 2, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Fellows \u201cwill work in Congress and as researchers in the Center for Policy Analysis and Research to analyze cannabis policy and social justice issues at large and criminal justice reform, in particular, through the lens of education, economic opportunity, incarceration, courts and law enforcement to propose policy solutions to Congress,\u201d it says.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">\u201cExamples of possible research related to cannabis policy include the impact of criminal justice reforms like decriminalization, expungement, sentencing and incarceration, the hurdles federal law presents for the emerging regulation of cannabis by states, black wealth creation and solutions for supporting licensed ownership and successful operation of businesses in the emerging cannabis industry for maximum impact in Black communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Scotts Miracle-Gro\u2019s foundation is providing the $600,000 is funding isn\u2019t especially surprising, as the company and its cannabis-focused Hawthorne Gardening Company subsidiary have taken a consistent stance in support of cannabis legalization and been involved in lobbying for various reform efforts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/cbcfinc.academicworks.com\/opportunities\/949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">description<\/a> of the requirements and opportunities for prospective fellows under the program, which will last for a 12-month period:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Work experience in Washington, D.C. (CBCF\u00a0reserves the right to host the Fellowship in a virtual format depending on the status of the\u00a0COVID-19 pandemic)<\/li>\n<li>Attend a one-week orientation<\/li>\n<li>6-Month Rotation Placement in the U.S. Congress and the CBFC\u2019s Center for Policy Analysis and Research, maintaining a forty (40) hours a week schedule<\/li>\n<li>Complete an issue brief for publication on the\u00a0CBCF\u00a0website or article for the\u00a0CPAR\u00a0Journal<\/li>\n<li>Participate in monthly Professional Development Sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applications for the program are already open and being reviewed, and the first two CBCF fellows will be selected and start on September 12. The deadline to apply is May 6, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>CBCF separately announced in December that it will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/congressional-black-caucus-foundation-partners-with-marijuana-industry-on-internship-program-for-future-cannabis-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launching a partnership with major marijuana industry stakeholders<\/a> to provide internship opportunities to black students and recent graduates who will get first-hand work experience at major cannabis companies this year.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Cannabis Council (USCC) is sponsoring that spring 2022 program, which will place nine interns at one of eight marijuana firms like Canopy, Columbia Care, Curaleaf, the Marijuana Policy Project and Weedmaps.<\/p>\n<p>CBCF was founded about five years after the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) came together in 1971. Its board is comprised of private industry executives, educators and several current members of the legislative caucus such as Reps.
