The group is attempting to argue that when people are presented with several marijuana reform options that only a minority support full adult-use legalization.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that, of the four separate options included, support for recreational legalization was highest, with 38 percent of U.S. voters backing it. That was followed by support for medical cannabis legalization (30 percent), decriminalization (19 percent) and prohibition (14 percent).<\/p>\n<p>In other words, about 68 percent of Americans favor some form of legal, regulated marijuana\u2014the types of systems that SAM regularly works to oppose when proposals go before lawmakers during legislative sessions or voters at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>But the group is really leaning into the fact that recreational cannabis on its own only got a plurality of support. In one chart, they contrasted adult-use responses with all three other options to make it look like people prefer \u201cOther Non-Legalization Marijuana Policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54148\" style=\"width: 513px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54148\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-54148\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-8.32.05-AM-1024x580-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"285\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-54148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via SAM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>They included responses for prohibition, decriminalization <em>and<\/em> medical marijuana in that category, despite the fact that medical cannabis is a form of legalization that\u2019s in effect in most states, and it was among the most popular options.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54155\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54155\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-54155\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-11.56.24-AM-1024x611-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"740\" height=\"442\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-54155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via SAM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cBig Pot, which is rapidly being taken over by the giants of Big Tobacco, Big Alcohol, and even Big Pharma, wants lawmakers to believe it enjoys widespread support among voters,\u201d SAM President Kevin Sabet <a href=\"https:\/\/learnaboutsam.org\/breaking-new-poll-finds-62-of-americans-favor-marijuana-policies-other-than-legalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> in a press release. \u201cIt pushes this false narrative with the public and uses decision-makers to expand its addiction-for-profit business model.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cfalse narrative\u201d is also supported by numerous other polls, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/strong-majority-of-americans-continues-to-support-marijuana-legalization-at-record-high-level-new-gallup-poll-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">from reputable sources like Gallup<\/a> and Pew Research Center that ostensibly are not bought out by the tobacco and alcohol lobby. Most Americans have been saying in no uncertain terms for years now that cannabis should be legal.<\/p>\n<p>This latest survey involved interviews with 1,000 Americans from January 7-9. SAM also commissioned surveys to specifically look at cannabis attitudes in Maryland and New Hampshire, where lawmakers and advocates are actively working to advance legalization this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BIG: New Emerson College polls find 62% of voters nationally, 55% in Maryland, and 53% in New Hampshire oppose recreational marijuana legalization when presented with other, non-legalization policy options (keep illegal, decriminalization, or medical legalization).<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SAM (@learnaboutsam) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/learnaboutsam\/status\/1481283982088093698?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">January 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>For Maryland, SAM again argued that its data shows majority opposition to recreational legalization. But again, what the survey found was that the most popular of the four options was adult-use legalization (45 percent), followed by medical cannabis legalization (27 percent), decriminalization (13 percent) and prohibition (16 percent).<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-two percent of respondents said they prefer some form of legalization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yet in another misleading chart, here\u2019s how SAM portrayed the findings:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54150\" style=\"width: 579px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54150\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-54150\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Screen-Shot-2022-01-12-at-8.34.12-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"569\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-54150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via SAM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The spin on the results could be put to the test if the Maryland legislature approves a recent bill from Del. Luke Clippinger (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/top-maryland-lawmaker-files-marijuana-legalization-referendum-for-2022-ballot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to put legalization on the state\u2019s 2022 ballot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland lawmakers have routinely batted down Big Pot\u2019s attempts to expand its addiction-for-profit model and this poll finds Maryland voters overwhelmingly support their continued resistance to implement a taxed commercial market,\u201d Sabet <a href=\"https:\/\/learnaboutsam.org\/new-emerson-college-poll-finds-55-of-maryland-voters-oppose-commercialized-marijuana-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For its New Hampshire survey, there\u2019s the same theme. Support for recreational was highest (47 percent), then medical (21 percent), then prohibition (18 percent) and then decriminalization (13 percent).<\/p>\n<p>The SAM <a href=\"https:\/\/learnaboutsam.org\/new-emerson-college-poll-finds-53-of-new-hampshire-voters-oppose-commercialized-marijuana-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> on the New Hampshire poll is a copy-and-paste of the Maryland statement, just swapping out the state names.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Hampshire lawmakers have routinely batted down Big Pot\u2019s attempts to expand its addiction-for-profit model and this poll finds New Hampshire voters overwhelmingly support their continued resistance to implement a taxed commercial market,\u201d Sabet said.<\/p>\n<p>In that state, the GOP-controlled House approved a bill last week to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/gop-controlled-new-hampshire-house-votes-to-legalize-marijuana-possession-and-cultivation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalize marijuana possession and personal cultivation<\/a> for adults.
