{"id":51935,"date":"2021-12-23T05:32:07","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T13:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/12\/23\/dea-wants-to-help-parents-decode-the-emojis-young-people-use-to-discuss-marijuana-and-other-bomb-ass-drugs\/"},"modified":"2021-12-23T13:45:51","modified_gmt":"2021-12-23T21:45:51","slug":"dea-wants-to-help-parents-decode-the-emojis-young-people-use-to-discuss-marijuana-and-other-bomb-ass-drugs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/12\/23\/dea-wants-to-help-parents-decode-the-emojis-young-people-use-to-discuss-marijuana-and-other-bomb-ass-drugs\/","title":{"rendered":"DEA Wants To Help Parents Decode The Emojis Young People Use To Discuss Marijuana And Other \u2018Bomb Ass\u2019 Drugs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1f4a3-1.png\" width=\"72\" height=\"72\"> <\/p>\n<p>The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says it\u2019s cracked the code to identify what kind of emojis young people are using to talk about buying and selling illicit drugs.<\/p>\n<p>But in classic \u201chow do you do fellow kids\u201d fashion, the federal agency doesn\u2019t appear to have the firmest grasp on the lingo\u2014omitting from a new guide for parents, for example, common emojis that are used in place of marijuana.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tenor-gif-embed\" data-postid=\"21437085\" data-share-method=\"host\" data-aspect-ratio=\"1.38528\" data-width=\"100%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/view\/meme-gif-21437085\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meme GIF<\/a>from <a href=\"https:\/\/tenor.com\/search\/meme-gifs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Meme GIFs<\/a><\/div>\n<p \/>\n<p>The agency even seems internally confused, as there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/Emoji%20Drug%20Code%20PDF_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/OPCK_2.0_Emoji%20Codes-Poster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iterations<\/a> of its drug emoji <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/OPCK_2.0_Emoji%20LgPoster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide<\/a> that show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/Emoji%20Decoded.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different<\/a> symbols used for the same drugs.<\/p>\n<p>DEA also determined that the emojis <img src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1f4a3.png\" alt=\"&#x1F4A3;\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/> and <img src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1f4a5.png\" alt=\"&#x1F4A5;\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/>\u2014which it interpreted to mean \u201cbomb ass shit\u201d\u2014are used frequently enough in illegal drug transactions to warrant attention on a government-produced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/OPCK%208.5x11_Printable%20Flyer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flyer<\/a> for parents.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53376\" style=\"width: 654px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53376\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-53376\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Screen-Shot-2021-12-20-at-12.38.01-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"504\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-53376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via DEA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>And one might wonder what Canadians have to say about the top U.S. drug enforcement agency designating the maple leaf emoji as \u201cuniversal for drugs\u201d given its close association to the country as the centerpiece of its flag.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, DEA says that its One Pill Can Kill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/onepill-toolbox\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campaign<\/a> \u201coffers an opportunity for the media, parents, teachers, educators, and community organizations to raise awareness about counterfeit prescription drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know the meaning behind certain emojis? Emojis were originally designed to represent an emotion, event, or activity, but have recently taken on a language of their own,\u201d the agency wrote. \u201cCriminal organizations, including drug traffickers, have noticed and are using emojis to buy and sell counterfeit pills and other illicit drugs on social media and through e-commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEA\u2019s reference guide \u201cis intended to give parents, caregivers and influencers a better sense of how this language is being used in conjunction with illegal drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">DEA created this Emoji Drug Code Decoded fact sheet. This guide is intended to give better sense how emojis are being used in conjunction w\/ illegal drugs. Pay attention to your teen\/loved ones &amp; don\u2019t be afraid to have the conversation if you suspect drug abuse is occurring. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HuPnfnkcEx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/HuPnfnkcEx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DEA Educational Foundation (@DEAEdFoundation) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DEAEdFoundation\/status\/1473317032766500864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">December 21, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>It did acknowledge, however, that \u201cthis list is not all-inclusive\u201d and emoji guide is \u201ca representative sample.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DEA Administrator Anne Milgram spoke about the new effort at a press conference last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCriminal drug networks are now front and center on social media, with us whenever our smart phones are,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/documents\/2021\/2021-12\/2021-12-16\/dea-administrator-milgrams-remarks-press-conference-december-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cKnown emojis and code words are being widely used as signals online, in the online buying and selling of deadly drugs like fentanyl and fentanyl-laced fake pills. That means that these deadly drugs are reaching our communities faster, easier, and cheaper than ever before. They are just one click away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-12\/2021-12-16%20OPCK%20Press%20Conference%20deck_Updated%20%28004%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">powerpoint<\/a> on the emoji data also included a slide on which social media platforms are most commonly used by criminal enterprises. Snapchat came in first, followed by Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. (The slide mistakenly swapped the logos for TikTok and YouTube, however.)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53375\" style=\"width: 684px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53375\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-53375\" src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Screen-Shot-2021-12-20-at-12.24.15-PM-1024x571-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"674\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-53375\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Via DEA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the agency\u2019s attempt to decode youth emoji trends has a certain cringe factor\u2014how do you leave out <img src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1f343-1.png\" alt=\"&#x1F343;\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/> and <img src=\"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/1f333-4.png\" alt=\"&#x1F333;\" class=\"wp-smiley\" style=\"height: 1em;max-height: 1em\" \/> as shorthand for marijuana?\u2014there is a counterfeit pill problem in the U.S. that\u2019s contributed to record overdose deaths.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, however, <em>adolescent<\/em> use of illicit drugs\u2014from marijuana to OxyContin\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/youth-marijuana-use-decreased-significantly-in-2021-despite-state-reforms-federally-funded-survey-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cdecreased significantly\u201d in 2021<\/a>, according to a federally funded survey released earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmojis, on their own, should not be indicative of illegal activity, but coupled with a change in behavior; change in appearance; or significant loss\/increase in income should be a reason to start an important conversation,\u201d DEA said.<\/p>\n<p>As the agency works to combat illicit drug trafficking, in part by deciphering emojis, it is also working to promote research into currently controlled substances like cannabis, psilocybin and MDMA.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a representative said this month that DEA is in favor of a White House proposal to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/dea-backs-white-house-plan-to-streamline-research-on-marijuana-psychedelics-and-other-schedule-i-drugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">streamline the process of researching Schedule I drugs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It has also repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/dea-again-boosts-2022-production-goals-for-psychedelics-like-psilocybin-mdma-and-dmt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased production goals for such substances<\/a> in order to meet demand from researchers investigating their potential risks and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>While these developments are promising, advocates are still frustrated that certain plants and fungi remain in the strictest drug category in the first place, especially considering the existing research that shows their medical value for certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p>A federal appeals court recently dismissed a petition to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/court-dismisses-dea-marijuana-rescheduling-case-but-judge-says-cannabis-reclassification-may-be-coming-anyway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">require the DEA to reevaluate cannabis\u2019s scheduling<\/a>\u00a0under the Controlled Substances Act.
