{"id":51456,"date":"2021-11-29T14:46:54","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T22:46:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/11\/29\/california-marijuana-businesses-seek-tax-amnesty-after-spate-of-robberies-in-oakland\/"},"modified":"2021-11-30T01:45:27","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T09:45:27","slug":"california-marijuana-businesses-seek-tax-amnesty-after-spate-of-robberies-in-oakland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/11\/29\/california-marijuana-businesses-seek-tax-amnesty-after-spate-of-robberies-in-oakland\/","title":{"rendered":"California Marijuana Businesses Seek Tax Amnesty After Spate Of Robberies In Oakland"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Members of the marijuana business community in Oakland, California are calling on state and local officials to provide \u201ctax amnesty\u201d after numerous cannabis companies were robbed earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>At a press conference on Monday, the Oakland-based association Supernova Women urged officials to deliver financial relief after more than 25 licensed marijuana businesses were burglarized or robbed during the week of November 15.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the non-profit group wants to see a repeal of the state\u2019s cannabis cultivation tax and a \u201csignificant reduction\u201d in the excise tax on marijuana products. They say that would help sustain small and minority-owned firms that are facing up to $5 million in losses following the robberies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll types of licensed cannabis businesses were impacted\u2014cultivation, manufacturing, distribution and retail, delivery and storefront,\u201d Amber Senter, executive director of Supernova Women, said at the press conference. \u201cThe cannabis industry needs tax relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SupernovaWomen\/videos\/377655760818122\" \/>\n<p>\u201cCannabis equity businesses in particular need more money and resources. Small businesses and small farmers need help,\u201d she said. \u201cPiling on and increasing taxes\u2014and now with the threat of robberies and violence\u2014is proving to be unbearable for cannabis operators. When we\u2019re faced with targeted attacks, the effects are magnified. These operators deserve the right to a safe work environment and local support in a city where we pay an exorbitant amount of taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the bay in San Francisco, activists have similarly criticized the police response to marijuana burglaries. Surveillance video from earlier this month that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/San-Francisco-police-only-watch-as-burglary-16647876.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtained<\/a> by The San Francisco Chronicle showed local police apparently observing and not intervening as suspects got away after they responded to a 911 call about a dispensary being burglarized.<\/p>\n<p>Senter ended Monday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/targeted-robberies-of-cannabis-businesses-in-bay-area-prompt-call-for-tax-relief-301432968.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">event<\/a> with a clear message to city and state officials: \u201cListen to us. This is our cry for help. Help us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not going to hire people with AK-47s and put them on the roof. That\u2019s not our job,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not why we started to sell weed. We didn\u2019t decide to get into cannabis to kill people. We\u2019re here to provide medicine and improve people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the spate of cannabis-related robberies, California Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) celebrated the 25th anniversary of the state\u2019s move to legalize medical cannabis and described today\u2019s market as \u201cnumber one in the world.\u201d However, he did <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-attorney-general-says-states-marijuana-market-is-number-one-in-the-world-but-theres-work-still-to-be-done\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledge that more work needs to be done<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, California officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/applications-are-open-for-marijuana-funded-california-cultivator-environmental-clean-up-grants-state-announces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started accepting concept proposals last month<\/a>\u00a0for a program aimed at helping small marijuana cultivators with environmental clean-up and restoration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-governor-vetoes-marijuana-billboard-legislation-saying-it-would-put-youth-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did veto a bill last month<\/a>\u00a0that would have allowed cannabis businesses to advertise on billboards along most highways in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The governor also recently approved a bill to boost the state\u2019s hemp industry by legalizing retail sales of a wide range of consumable products derived from the plant\u2014including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-governor-signs-bill-legalizing-smokable-hemp-and-sale-of-cbd-infused-foods-and-drinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBD-infused foods, beverages, cosmetics and dietary supplements<\/a>.
