Shortly after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the Associated Press <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-only-on-ap-taliban-kabul-afghanistan-312374ad26aa5741394b2308bfd99487\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> on clandestine raids where drug consumers were threatened with violence if they did not agree to enter into treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban also banned the production of opium prior to the U.S. military invasion in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to marijuana, Al Arabiya <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/News\/world\/2021\/11\/24\/Taliban-sign-450m-deal-with-Australian-group-for-cannabis-center-Taliban-spokesman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that the plant served as a major source of revenue for Taliban insurgents during the U.S. occupation.
