Part of that stigma comes from the enforcement of punitive drug policies, including some that remain in effect, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Volkow said that \u201cstigma remains one of the biggest obstacles to confronting America\u2019s current drug crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment policies, including criminal justice measures, often reflect\u2014and contribute to\u2014stigma,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen we penalize people who use drugs because of an addiction, we suggest that their use is a character flaw rather than a medical condition. And when we incarcerate addicted individuals, we decrease their access to treatment and exacerbate the personal and societal consequences of their substance use.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Addiction stigma pervades medicine, policy &amp; communities. Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RdZQOrZeJJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/RdZQOrZeJJ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HvnYUfECsN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/HvnYUfECsN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NIDAnews (@NIDAnews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NIDAnews\/status\/1457696279962820618?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">November 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>The official has made similar remarks in the past, arguing that there\u2019s an apparent need to decriminalize drug possession and emphasizing that the drug war has disproportionately impacted communities of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe aura of illegality affects the treatment of people with addiction,\u201d Volkow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news-insights\/end-drug-crisis-bring-addiction-out-shadows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cFor example, some treatment programs expel patients for positive urine samples, as if relapse were not simply a known symptom of the disorder and a clinical signal to adjust the treatment approach but instead actual wrongdoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stigma has also slowed the adoption of harm reduction programs like syringe exchange and access to the anti-overdose medication naloxone \u201cout of a moralistic\u2014as well as factually incorrect\u2014belief that those measures encourage illegal drug use,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Volkow similarly talked about how decriminalization, coupled with increased treatment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/top-federal-drug-official-discusses-rise-in-psychedelics-use-and-the-need-to-study-marijuana-from-dispensaries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">would represent a superior alternative<\/a> to incarcerating people over drugs in a recent interview with Marijuana Moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a large-scale social intervention to change public attitudes toward addiction and people who have the disease,\u201d she wrote in the new op-ed. \u201cBesides ensuring proper training and the resources needed to help patients with substance use disorders, we need to seriously reconsider policies\u2014not only laws but regulations and practices in health care and other settings\u2014that promote viewing substance use as wrongdoing.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Far too often, shame and stigma fuel addiction and prevent treatment, argues Nora Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NIDAnews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@NIDAnews<\/a>).
