In Seven Ohio Cities Approve Marijuana Decriminalization Ballot Measures, With Seven Others Defeated"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>Voters in more than a dozen Ohio cities had the chance to weigh in on marijuana reform on their ballots on Tuesday, and seven of those jurisdictions ultimately approved local measures to decriminalize cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Going into Election Day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/four-more-ohio-cities-approve-marijuana-decriminalization-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">22 jurisdictions across the state had already adopted local statues<\/a> effectively decriminalizing possession, some of which have been passed by voter initiatives while others were adopted by city councils.<\/p>\n<p>In most of the municipalities where marijuana was on the ballot this week, the text of the proposal simply said, \u201cshall [jurisdiction] adopt the Sensible Marihuana Ordinance, which lowers the penalty for misdemeanor marijuana offenses to the lowest penalty allowed by State Law?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others were lengthier and spelled out changes to local statutes, specifying that \u201cif the amount of the drug involved is less than two hundred grams, possession of marihuana is a minor misdemeanor drug abuse offense\u201d and that \u201cpersons convicted of violating this section shall be fined $0.00.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Voters in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/belmont\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0007__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Martins Ferry<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/hocking\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=19____1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Murray City<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/perry\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0001__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Lexington<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/perry\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0007__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Straitsville<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/jefferson\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=078___1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rayland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/jefferson\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=079___1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tiltonsville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/jefferson\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=081___1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yorkville<\/a> approved the decriminalization proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, voters in <a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/belmont\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0071__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brookside<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/jefferson\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=053___1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dillonvale<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/hocking\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=15____2&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laurelville<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/vinton\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0007__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McArthur<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/belmont\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0109__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morristown<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/jefferson\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=054___1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Pleasant<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lookup.boe.ohio.gov\/vtrapp\/belmont\/getballot.aspx?elect=20211102G&amp;prsid=0127__1&amp;bpty=X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Powhatan Point<\/a> rejected the reform measures.<\/p>\n<p>The police department in McArthur made headlines last month by circulating\u2014and then deleting from Facebook\u2014a press release from the chief saying that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/ohio-police-department-deletes-post-warning-of-downhill-tumble-if-voters-approve-marijuana-decriminalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cannabis decriminalization could be the beginning of \u201ca downhill tumble\u201d<\/a> for society.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, NORML Appalachia of Ohio and the Sensible Movement Coalition also sought to qualify reform initiatives in dozens more cities, towns and villages this year, but not every effort made it across the finish line by the signature gathering deadline. In those places where petitioning efforts fell short this cycle, the advocates say they\u2019ll try again in future elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe initiatives will reduce penalties for misdemeanor marijuana offenses to the lowest allowed by state law, allowing the municipalities to focus on more pressing issues in their communities,\u201d the local NORML chapter said in a press release. \u201cThis new citizens\u2019 law is now shared by almost 3,000,000 residents of Ohio, with more communities already scheduled for 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SensibleMovementCoalition\/posts\/832749927403526\" data-width=\"552\" \/>\n<p>Don Keeney, an activist with NORML, said Tuesday\u2019s overall result \u201cclearly shows support is gaining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually low turnouts favor conservatives views,\u201d he told Marijuana Moment, noting that the highest turnout in the jurisdictions with cannabis on the ballot this year that he saw was just 9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet despite this we still managed to win,\u201d he said. \u201cThe losses we had were very close 55 percent to 45 percent. Had the turnout been better we would have won there too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a separate campaign recently cleared a final hurdle to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/ohio-marijuana-activists-cleared-to-collect-signatures-for-2022-legalization-ballot-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">begin collecting signatures for a 2022 ballot initiative<\/a>\u00a0to legalize marijuana statewide.<\/p>\n<p>The Coalition to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol (CTRMLA)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/ohio-lawmakers-officially-file-marijuana-legalization-bill-in-historic-first-for-the-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched its ballot effort in July<\/a>.
