That\u2019s 55 percent more cannabis earnings for state coffers than was generated in the prior fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst\u2019s Office said combined excise and cultivation tax revenue for the fourth quarter, which ended in June, amounted to $212 million\u2014roughly tying the first quarter of the fiscal year for the most tax dollars raised in any single three-month period since legal sales launched.<\/p>\n<p>The new figures do not take into account additional regular sales taxes generated from cannabis, nor do they include any local revenues to municipalities where the transactions take place.<\/p>\n<p>Remarkably, this trend of increased sales and tax revenue has been occurring amid the coronavirus pandemic, which forced many businesses to close and contributed to rising unemployment. Last quarter\u2019s amount was revised in the new <a href=\"https:\/\/lao.ca.gov\/LAOEconTax\/Article\/Detail\/687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>, for example, from an initial estimate of $163 million to a new total of $197 million.<\/p>\n<p>A separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdtfa.ca.gov\/news\/21-08.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> of the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdtfa.ca.gov\/dataportal\/charts.htm?url=CannabisTaxRevenues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> released by the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration points out that since January 2018, total recreational marijuana revenue to date for the state is $2.8 billion, which includes $1.4 billion in excise tax, $347.4 million in cultivation tax and $1 billion in sales tax.<\/p>\n<p>California isn\u2019t an isolated case when it comes to strong cannabis sales. A recent scientific analysis of sales data in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon and Washington State found that marijuana purchases \u201chave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/marijuana-sales-increased-in-multiple-states-during-covid-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased more during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>\u00a0than in the previous two years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July alone, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/four-states-report-record-breaking-marijuana-sales-in-july\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three states saw record-breaking sales<\/a> for recreational cannabis. The same goes for Missouri\u2019s medical marijuana program.<\/p>\n<p>Illinois saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/illinois-sets-yet-another-record-for-monthly-marijuana-sales-with-retailers-citing-a-lollapalooza-boost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nearly $128 million in recreational cannabis purchases<\/a> last month\u2014more than double the total monthly sales from a year ago. July marks the fifth consecutive month that sales in Illinois\u2019s adult-use market have topped $100 million. If the trend continues, the state is on track to see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/illinois-will-blow-past-1-billion-in-legal-marijuana-sales-in-2021-chamber-of-commerce-president-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than $1 billion in adult-use marijuana sales<\/a>\u00a0in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Adult-use marijuana sales in Maine reached $9.4 million in July\u2014a 45 percent increase from the prior month\u2019s record.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/michigan-marijuana-sales-broke-another-record-in-july-state-data-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">marijuana sales broke another record last month<\/a> with more than $171 million in cannabis transactions, according to data from a state regulatory body.
