The governor of Colorado on Friday presented the creators of South Park with souvenir license plates that pay homage to the fictional marijuana company Tegridy Farms that\u2019s featured in multiple episodes of the comedy series. And he said one of the show\u2019s most popular stoner characters would make a good mascot for the state.<\/p>\n
Gov. Jared Polis (D) met with South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the show, which takes place in a fictionalized Colorado city. He handed them each ceremonial plates that are based on an actual one that was auctioned off as part of a cannabis-themed charity that the state launched in April.<\/p>\n
Residents were able to bid on vanity plates with terms<\/a> like \u201cBONG,\u201d \u201cGANJA,\u201d \u201cGOTWAX,\u201d \u201cHEMP\u201d and \u201cISIT420.\u201d The purpose of the auction was to raise money for a state disability fund.<\/p>\n Polis said the \u201cTEGRIDY\u201d plate \u201cwas one of the highest-selling\u201d items, with \u201c$5,000 raised for charity.\u201d The only other one that went for more was \u201cISIT420,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n \u201cWe raised over $50,000 for charity, and I would like to present you with\u2014we had these made up, these are not for vehicles,\u201d the governor said. \u201cThese are souvenir Tegrity license plates, officially for Colorado. They\u2019ll go up on your wall and your office.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier in the conversation, Polis asked the creators which character they\u2019d pick as a mascot for Colorado. The talking towel named Towelie\u2014famous for getting high\u2014was Stone\u2019s choice. He said it\u2019d be a good way to represent the state\u2019s marijuana businesses, and the governor agreed that Towelie would be a \u201cgood\u201d mascot.<\/p>\n The comments at the South Park event aren\u2019t the first cannabis-related actions the governor has taken this week.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, Polis also celebrated the fact that the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently approved Colorado\u2019s hemp regulatory plan<\/a>, saying the state \u201cis the undisputed leader in the cannabis industry, and our hemp plan is a model for the country.\u201d At an event held next to a hemp field, he unveiled a congratulatory statement from singer and marijuana icon Willie Nelson saying that \u201cColorado should be proud of leading the charge for the hemp industry.\u201d<\/p>\n Marijuana Moment reached out to the governor\u2019s office about whether the South Park creators were the ones who bought the \u201cTEGRIDY\u201d license plate in the auction and whether there are any imminent plans to issue a proclamation making Towelie the state\u2019s official mascot, but a representative did not immediately respond.<\/p>\n South Park\u2019s Tegridy episodes might take place in a fictional world, but they\u2019ve satirized real-world issues in the marijuana industry. In 2019, for example, the show took a not-so-subtle jab at a video produced by the cannabis company MedMen, and it\u2019s generally been critical of the corporatization of the market<\/a>.<\/p>\n But Tegridy Farms may soon become a corporation in the real world, with Stone telling<\/a> Bloomberg earlier this month that, \u201cI think we\u2019re really for the first time going to bring Tegridy Weed into real life.\u201d<\/p>\n A page on the official South Park Tegridy Farms site showed that its creators bought up numerous inactive domain names, including one focused on a specific strain name\u2014\u201dCatotonic Tegridy Bud\u201d\u2014that was mentioned in a 2018 episode.<\/p>\n Michigan Marijuana Sales Broke Another Record In July, State Data Shows<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n Photo courtesy of Facebook\/Gov.
