It recommends that the group \u201cadd to their work plan an examination of public policy governing psychedelic medicines,\u201d or entheogens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OEIR Task Force work will expand efforts for solving the local overdose crisis, drug user health inequities, and region-wide safety and health by proposing and evaluating recommendations in order to build evidence and enhance practices on innovations in recovery and person-centered interventions,\u201d the letter, led by Councilmembers Lisa Herbold and Andrew Lewis, states. \u201cGiven the potential of entheogens as treatments for substance addiction and behavioral mental health conditions, we believe this topic is a suitable addition to the Task Force work plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch Council members discuss the psychedelics letter, around 11:00 into the video below:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p>Lewis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/slog\/2021\/06\/07\/58051754\/seattle-city-council-expresses-support-for-studying-progressive-policy-on-psychedelic-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Stranger that he will \u201calmost certainly\u201d introduce a measure in the Council to make psychedelics the city\u2019s lowest law enforcement priority once OEIR\u2019s recommendations are submitted.<\/p>\n<p>Decriminalize Nature Seattle\u2014one of numerous local chapters of the national organization pushing for psychedelics policy reform\u2014helped inform the message and was cited by the local legislators as having demanded \u201clong overdue changes to<br \/>\npolicies on entheogens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City Council shares the concerns of community members organizing for change, and urges OEIR to incorporate into their work plan recommendations to liberalize policy on entheogens at the state and local level,\u201d the letter continues. \u201cOEIR is uniquely positioned to provide recommendations to City of Seattle and King County governments, as well as the joint Seattle-King County Board and Department of Public Health on policy related to entheogens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter notes local psychedelics reform measures that have advanced in cities and states, both via citizen initiatives and acts of city councils, since Denver became the first jurisdiction in the U.S. to loosen penalties surrounding psilocybin mushrooms in 2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LETS GOOOOOOOO! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vLTFrr72Pw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/vLTFrr72Pw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Decrim Nature Seattle (@DecrimNatureSEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DecrimNatureSEA\/status\/1401964146585862144?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">June 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>For example, voters in neighboring Oregon overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure last year to create a first-of-its-kind program where people can be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/oregon-voters-approve-initiative-to-legalize-psilocybin-mushroom-therapy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treated with psilocybin in a clinical setting<\/a>. In March, Gov. Kate Brown (D) appointed an advisory board that will help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/oregon-governor-appoints-panel-to-implement-historic-legal-psilocybin-therapy-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">facilitate the implementation of that initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A New York lawmaker introduced a bill last week that would require the state to establish an institute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/new-york-bill-would-create-state-sponsored-psychedelics-research-institute\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research the therapeutic potential of psychedelics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In Texas, legislators recently sent a bill to similarly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/texas-bills-to-expand-medical-marijuana-program-and-require-psychedelics-study-head-to-governors-desk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">require the state to study the therapeutic potential of psychedelics<\/a>\u00a0to their governor\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n<p>The California Senate on Tuesday approved a bill that would\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/california-senate-approves-bill-to-legalize-possession-of-psychedelics-like-psilocybin-and-lsd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalize the possession of psychedelics<\/a>, including LSD, DMT and ibogaine.<\/p>\n<p>Seven cities\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/oakland-officials-decriminalize-psychedelics-and-say-theyll-work-to-legalize-sales-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oakland<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/santa-cruz-city-council-approves-psychedelics-decriminalization-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Cruz<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/city-council-unanimously-votes-to-decriminalize-psychedelics-in-ann-arbor-michigan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ann Arbor<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/washington-d-c-voters-approve-psychedelics-decriminalization-in-nations-capital-campaign-announces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington, D.C.<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/local-massachusetts-lawmakers-unanimously-approve-psychedelics-decriminalization-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Somerville,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/cambridge-city-council-decriminalizes-psychedelics-and-urges-police-to-end-drug-arrests-more-broadly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/third-massachusetts-city-approves-psychedelics-decriminalization-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northampton<\/a>\u2014have decriminalized possession of a broader collection of plant-and fungi-based psychedelics since Denver\u2019s move.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Seattle, the Council said it \u201c<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'segoe ui', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'helvetica neue', sans-serif\">looks forward to <\/span>continued engagement with the OEIR to follow-up on the requests in this letter via our representatives on the OEIR, and putting into policy recommendations disseminated by the task
