Amazon said on Tuesday that it will stop drug testing many of its workers for marijuana and will instead \u201ctreat it the same as alcohol use.\u201d It is also formally joining the movement in support of cannabis legalization and will actively lobby Congress in support of legislation to end federal prohibition.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the past, like many employers, we\u2019ve disqualified people from working at Amazon if they tested positive for marijuana use,\u201d Amazon said in an update posted to its company news site. \u201cHowever, given where state laws are moving across the U.S., we\u2019ve changed course.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amazon will now \u201cno longer include marijuana in our comprehensive drug screening program for any positions not regulated by the Department of Transportation, and will instead treat it the same as alcohol use.\u201d It will continue to do\u00a0impairment checks on the job and will test for all drugs, including cannabis and alcohol, after any incident.<\/p>\n
The move by one of the U.S.\u2019s largest employers will lead to a significant reduction on the number of workers in the country who face the prospect of being fired simply for using cannabis at home while not on the clock.<\/p>\n
