Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer\u2019s (D-NY) separate cannabis bill is still expected \u201csoon.\u201d<\/span>

\n<\/span>President Joe Biden\u2019s<\/span><\/a> budget proposes continuing to block Washington, D.C. from legalizing marijuana sales. But he is the first president to suggest keeping the separate rider that protects state medical cannabis laws from Department of Justice interference, a provision that both Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump sought to delete.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>The <\/span>Connecticut legislature\u2019s Appropriations Committee<\/span><\/a> approved the governor\u2019s marijuana legalization bill\u2014setting the stage for a potential Senate floor vote on a newly negotiated deal this week.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>With just weeks left in the session, <\/span>Rhode Island representatives<\/span><\/a> filed a new marijuana legalization bill. Competing plans have already been introduced by Gov. Dan McKee (D) and Senate leaders, and there\u2019s talk of coming back in September to handle the issue.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Illinois lawmakers<\/span><\/a> sent a bill aimed at increasing equity in marijuana licensing to the desk of Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D), who says he will sign it.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Andrew Yang\u2019s<\/span><\/a> new plan for military veterans says that if he\u2019s elected he will push for legal psilocybin and MDMA therapy, implement cannabis licensing equity and treat drugs as a health issue and \u201cnot as a criminal matter.\u201d<\/span>

\n<\/span>Several former federal drug czars<\/span><\/a> and organizations sent a letter calling on President Joe Biden to appoint a director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.<\/span>

\n<\/span>Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ)<\/span><\/a> and 12 cosponsors filed a resolution that contains a clause criticizing the Philippine government\u2019s campaign against independent media that exposed its bloody \u201cdrug war.\u201d<\/span>

\n<\/span>Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR)<\/span><\/a> tweeted, \u201cThe failed #WarOnDrugs \u2014that\u2019s selectively enforced against people of color\u2014 is a stain on America. With today\u2019s reintroduction of the MORE Act, we\u2019re working to turn the corner. It\u2019s past time to end the cannabis prohibition and ensure restorative justice for those hurt by it.\u201d<\/span>
