{"id":47382,"date":"2021-04-28T04:23:38","date_gmt":"2021-04-28T12:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/04\/28\/usda-is-developing-hemp-based-cosmetics-and-personal-care-products\/"},"modified":"2021-04-28T13:45:46","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T21:45:46","slug":"usda-is-developing-hemp-based-cosmetics-and-personal-care-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cannabiscultivatornews.com\/home\/index.php\/2021\/04\/28\/usda-is-developing-hemp-based-cosmetics-and-personal-care-products\/","title":{"rendered":"USDA Is Developing Hemp-Based Cosmetics And Personal Care Products"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is teaming up with a chemical manufacturing company on a two-year project that could significantly expand the hemp-based cosmetics market.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to take an innovative approach to hemp processing to create \u201ccosmeceuticals,\u201d or ingredients that \u201cperform specific functions, like protecting skin from UV light, retaining moisture, or stabilizing other active ingredients used in skin-care formulations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USDA\u2019s Agricultural Research Service announced on Tuesday that it will be working with the Illinois-based Midwest Bioprocessing Center (MBC) to apply the process known as \u201cbio-catalysis\u201d to hemp seed oil. Instead of relying on \u201charsh chemicals and solvents\u201d to bind antioxidants to fats in products like vegetable oil, bio-catalysis involves using enzymes and heat to facilitate that binding.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USDA_ARS?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">@USDA_ARS<\/a> and company partner to explore personal care products from hemp with the goal of expanding the market for hemp seed oil <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JKTKSVBvKd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/JKTKSVBvKd<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/U4UokhESPU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/U4UokhESPU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Agricultural Research Service (@USDA_ARS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USDA_ARS\/status\/1387050535975485447?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">April 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p \/>\n<p>Earlier research showed that this process could be used to create compounds called feruloyl soy glycerides made from soybean oil, and those have since been used as ingredients in personal care products \u201cbecause of the ultraviolet absorbance and antioxidant properties that they offered,\u201d USDA said.<\/p>\n<p>Now the federal agency is interested in exploring the potential of applying this process to hemp seed oil\u2014the latest example of USDA proactively exploring ways to expand the industry since the crop was federally legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollaborating with industry partners like MBC, which has expertise in enzymology and the infrastructure for scale-up, is critical to exploring expanded uses for our original technology,\u201d David Compton of USDA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/news-events\/news\/research-news\/2021\/usda-agency-and-company-partner-to-explore-personal-care-products-from-hemp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The agency also noted that, beyond cosmetics and personal care markets, its researchers are also looking into ways to \u201cbetter process hemp into fuels, lubricants and adhesives, as well as functional food ingredients and fiber products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>USDA also recently announced that it is seeking permission to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/usda-seeks-information-from-20000-hemp-farmers-on-production-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collect additional data on hemp production<\/a> from tens of thousands of farmers and ranchers.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, USDA announced plans to distribute a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/usda-wants-to-survey-18000-hemp-businesses-about-how-they-grow-and-sell-the-crop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">separate national survey to gain insights from thousands of hemp businesses<\/a>\u00a0that could inform its approach to regulating the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, recently confirmed Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who is widely considered an ally of the hemp industry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/bidens-usda-secretary-gives-final-approval-to-hemp-rules-despite-ongoing-industry-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed off on national hemp regulations<\/a> following a departmental review that began during the Biden presidential transition. Those rules formally took effect on March 22.<\/p>\n<p>USDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marijuanamoment.net\/usda-releases-final-rule-for-hemp-two-years-after-crop-was-federally-legalized\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released the final rule in January<\/a>\u2014about two years after the crop was federally legalized.
